We are very happy to announce that Lion compatible versions of Nisus Writer Pro and Nisus Writer Express are now available for download.
Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.1 has received a handful of fixes for issues that appeared after its release. These fixes include a page number display bug, a Bookends scanning issue, and various fixes for .doc/docx importing. Pro 2.0.1 has received fixes for Lion compatibility and adds the new Lion full screen feature. Those of you who are using other supported versions of OS X will have full screen as before.
Nisus Writer Express 3.4 adds Lion compatibility, Lion full screen, and receives a (large) number of bug fixes. This update also includes a different file importer that is compatible with both Intel and PowerPC Macs. Unfortunately making this change eliminates WordPerfect read only capability.
We are also releasing Nisus Writer Pro 1.4.2 for those of you still using Pro 1.x. This release contains basic Lion compatibility, fixes for .doc/.docx importing and other smaller fixes.
These new versions are available now and are free updates to all users of Nisus Writer Pro 1.x and 2.0 and Nisus Writer Express 3. You can update either through the applications themselves or by downloading at the Express and Pro download pages. Nisus Writer Pro 1.4.2 gets its own download page.
Nisus Writer Pro 1.4.2, 2.0.1 and Nisus Writer Express 3.4 require Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher.
I have read many thoughts and memories regarding Steve Jobs today. The one I like the most is this story told by Vic Gundotra of Google.
To me it sums up what Steve Jobs is about.
According to various news reports, OS X Lion will be released on the 20th of July. To address the few issues we have found with Lion we have released beta versions of Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.1 and Nisus Writer Express 3.4.
Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.1 addresses Lion compatibility issues and receives a handful of fixes for issues that appeared after its release (including fixes for the page number display bug and the Bookends issue). The beta release of Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.1 is available now (this is a direct download link).
Nisus Writer Express 3.4 also fixes Lion incompatibilities and receives a number of bug fixes. Nisus Writer Express 3.4 is available now (direct link) for your downloading pleasure.
Disclaimer: Please remember that this is beta software, and is still in development. Please take appropriate caution. Use copies of important documents, for example. Please read the release notes located under the Help menu in both Express and Pro.
If the rumors are correct, Mac OS X 10.7 (otherwise known as Lion) will be released very soon.
Currently, Express 3.3.2 and Nisus Writer Pro 2.0 are compatible with Lion, apart from a few issues that we have identified so far. These issues will be fixed in Express and Pro 2 in upcoming releases. These updates should be released within a week. Pro 2 will receive a handful of fixes for issues that appeared after its release (including fixes for the page number display bug and the Bookends issue).
The other big issue that will come up, if the reports are true, is that Rosetta will no longer be included in OS X.
(A quick primer: Rosetta is software that enables PowerPC applications to run on the newer Intel Macs.)
Rosetta was introduced with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) and was also included with Leopard (10.5). It then became an optional installation with Snow Leopard (10.6). That is apparently where it will end.
How does this relate to Express and Pro? While both of these applications are universal binaries (which can run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs) the file importers were PowerPC until recently. Since that means using Rosetta, this presents a problem.
In the case of Pro, we have already switched the file importer to Intel, so there is no problem for owners of Intel Macs. We still offer a version with a PowerPC importer, but moving forward we will phase out PowerPC support.
Express uses a different file importer that is only PowerPC. With Rosetta (allegedly) being phased out we will switch Express to use the file importer built into OS X, which is compatible with both Intel and PowerPC Macs.
So that is the update. More information will follow once we get close to release.
The fine folks at TidBits have posted an extensive review of Nisus Writer Pro 2.
Incidentally, the review was written by a person whom some of you may remember.
After a lengthy development and private beta testing period, we are very happy to announce the release of Nisus Writer Pro 2. As I stated in the previous blog post, this is a huge release for us. And believe me when I tell you we are very happy to have this out. We can all sleep now! Well, maybe tomorrow.
This new version has taken us pretty close to two years to realize, and we have added many features that have been requested by our users (that means you guys). We also added things that we like, just to be fair.
Anyway, this new version of Nisus Writer Pro adds the following features:
In addition, there are literally hundreds (around 500!) of fixes, additions, optimizations, and other changes in Pro 2. A full list of changes is available at the Pro release notes page. As I stated earlier, this is a huge release for us.
Nisus Writer Pro 2 is available now at our store for only $79. You can upgrade from previous versions of Pro for $49. A three license Family Pack is also available for $99. You can order a CD version for an additional $10 plus shipping. Those of you who have purchased Nisus Writer Pro 1.x in the last 90 days will be upgraded to Pro 2 for free. An email containing a license number and a link to download should be arriving shortly.
Nisus Writer Pro 2 requires at least Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11. As a side note, the main download is now an Intel only version. A version that also works on Power PC machines will also be available. All versions can be downloaded from the Pro download page.
For more information and to download the 15 day fully working demo please visit our Nisus Writer Pro page.
Thank you for your continued support.
We have been pretty quiet over the last few months or so. Our last update to Pro was a little over a year ago. However, that doesn’t mean we haven’t been working. On the contrary, we have been working very hard. We just don’t like to talk about features we are working on before they are ready. We know this upsets some people but we would rather not say anything until we can back up what we promise.
So having said all of that, I can say a few things about what we have been working on. We have worked hard to add a couple of huge features to Nisus Writer Pro: track changes and a suite of drawing tools (shapes, lines, floating text boxes). Those features alone took a great deal of time. There are other features, but those two are the ones I can talk about for the moment. We will announce the other features when we release, which should be in the next few weeks. Hopefully sooner.
The other issue I would like to mention is that the next release of Nisus Writer Pro will be a paid upgrade. The price will be $49 to download the upgrade, and a CD version will be available for an extra $10 plus shipping. The full version is $79. There will also be a family pack and academic pricing.
So that’s the update for now. More after we finalize everything and are ready to release.
From the same company who brought you this cinematic experience and … well, whatever this is, now brings you this:
The full story on the thinking behind this is here.
Windows Phone 7 might actually be a pretty good product. But, this isn’t going to help your cause, mates.
That is so bad I won’t even bother with this page.
In an astonishing turn of events, it seems that Mac news sites and blogs are realizing that the Mac still exists.
I kid, but it really does seem like the Mac gets short changed these days. And word processors are even less talked about than the Mac. But, there is hope. Over the last few weeks, we have spotted three articles that mention our products. Hooray for us!
Besides the Macgasm article previously mentioned on this blog, MacTalk has a great round up of word processors called “You Don’t Need Word: A Word Processing Round-Up”. The article recommends both Nisus Writer Express and Nisus Writer Pro.
In an article on Mac360.com titled “A Tale Of 2 Writing Tools: Strange vs. Normal”, Bambi Brannan writes “If you’re looking for a complete writing tool, an aircraft carrier of features, Nisus Writer Pro carries the flag.”
If you haven’t tried out either Express or Pro, please download the demo versions from the above links and give them a try. As the above articles show, they come highly recommended.
And just like that, VersionTracker is gone. It was purchased by CNET a few years ago, and seemed to get less attention as time went on. Now it has been rolled into CNET Downloads.
It’s not that I was a huge fan of VersionTracker, but in its day it was a valuable tool. In its heyday it was the place to find out about updates to your favorite Mac software. You could also read the sometimes hilarious comments and angry rants. It was both fun and infuriating for developers.
If you are not a fan of CNET Downlads, MacUpdate is around to fulfill your Mac updating needs.
But I for one will miss VersionTracker just a bit.
Since school has started for most, if not all of you, I thought it would be a good time to mention this article from Macgasm.
In her “Macgasm Presents: A Back-to-School Macstravaganza!” article, Susan Piggot mentions Nisus Writer Pro among many cool and essential apps for those of you heading back to school.
There are many reasons to purchase Pro, but one of the best in this case is cost. The academic version of Nisus Writer Pro is only $39. This is the same version of Nisus Writer Pro that us non-academics purchase for $79. The only difference is price.
So, if you are an academic, and you want a word processor for your Mac that won’t break the bank, Nisus Writer Pro is a great choice.
I know that Labor Day is supposed to be a day to celebrate us working folks. But, it also seems to be an excuse to throw a sale. And we here at Nisus are no exception.
From now until September 7th, save twenty percent on most versions of Nisus Writer Pro and Nisus Writer Express. Just go to our store and purchase, no coupons or secret handshakes needed.
So if you ever wanted to purchase Pro or Express and save some money, now is the time.
A competition to design a new symbol for the Indian Rupee just came to a close. The new symbol is distinct from the generic rupee symbol (“Rs” / ₨, Unicode U+20A8) used by a variety of rupee currencies and is destined for inclusion in the Unicode standard.
Personally I think the new symbol looks quite nice and is the best of the five finalists, though I prefer the fluid handwriting appearance shown in the finalist graphic. But then, that’s why fonts exist.
While most everyone in the USA is celebrating our independence by consuming copious amounts of food and drink, we are celebrating by throwing a Fourth of July sale.

To take advantage of this sale, go to our store and enter the coupon code “fourthofjuly” in the coupon text box. You will then see the discount reflected in the shopping cart.

As of 30 June, we have decided to end support for all products that we are not currently selling. This means we will offer support for Nisus Writer Express, Nisus Writer Pro, Nisus Thesaurus, and Nisus Writer 6.5. We will no longer offer support for any other product.
However, you can still find support for older products in our support forum, and on the mailing lists.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
This coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend for us in the U.S. It is the time when we remember our military veterans. It also means a three day weekend for us working slobs. Not to mention plenty of sales. This reminds me to tell you about our weekend sale.
To celebrate the long weekend, we are discounting Nisus Writer Pro. The full version, normally $79, is $69. The upgrade is $40 (normally $45). The three license Family Pack is $89 (regular price $99). CD versions are an extra $10 plus shipping.
You can order directly from our store.
So if you would like to upgrade from Express, or if you are using another word processor and checking out our award winning Nisus Writer Pro, now is the time to buy.
The sale ends in 31 May, so act quickly!
We are happy to announce the release of Nisus Writer Express 3.3.2 and Nisus Writer Pro 1.4.1.
Both Nisus Writer Express 3.3.2 and Nisus Writer Pro 1.4.1 are bug fix releases. Pro 1.4.1 also gains an updated file importer. For those of you who want to read the release notes for Express, you can find them on the Express release notes page. The Pro release notes are can be found on the Pro release notes page.
These updates can be downloaded from our Express and Pro pages. They can also be downloaded from within the applications, using the “Check for Updates…” menu located under the Nisus Writer Express or Nisus Writer Pro menus.
We have decided to produce an Intel-only version of Pro 1.4.1 that can be downloaded from our Pro download page. The Intel version should show a significant speed improvement in file translations (.doc import is faster, for example). This version will only run on Macs with Intel processors (this means Macs produced from early 2006 through now. You can check this by checking “About this Mac” which is located under the Apple menu on your Mac.). You can only download this version from the above link. Using the updater within Pro will download the universal binary version.
Enjoy!
Unless you have been under a rock for the past week, the ash cloud hanging over Iceland is really making a mess of air travel all over the world. Air Freight as well. I was reminded of this today when a customer from Europe was wondering when their package was going to arrive.
The latest update from the company we use for shipping (USPS) is advising their customers that “As a result of these airport closures, several postal administrations have reported they cannot receive and dispatch mail. Consequently, USPS outbound flows have been impacted beginning April 14, 2010. Although restrictions on flights are beginning to lift, outbound and inbound flows will continue to be affected.”
So if you are in Europe, and are thinking about order a Pro CD, be aware that while you will eventually receive the package, we cannot give a precise date as to when the package will arrive.
We are hoping this won’t last long and shipping will resume to normal levels soon.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all!
I know a bunch of you are looking forward to drinking green beer and generally enjoy your day of being Irish. However, before you spend on that beer, I should tell you that we are having a sale to celebrate the day.
Enter the coupon code “green” and save 10 percent on the purchase price of Nisus Writer Pro.
The sale ends on 18 March, so buy quickly if you want to save some … well, green.
