Nisus Text Analyzer and other features nobody ever talks about…

Post by Þorvarður »

There are certain Nisus features that nobody has ever mentioned here on the forum, as far as I can remember. This could mean that working with such features is self-evident or that nobody is using them. One such feature is Nisus Text Analyzer (File > Text Analysis…)

Has anyone ever seriously used this feature? And if so, for what?

I don't think it can help me write better text. The only advantage I see is that the statistics can be copied and pasted into another document were they then automatically appear as a table. Linguists who are analyzing a certain text may want to know how many words the longest sentence has and how many words there are on average per sentence. Apart from that, I can't think of anything else that might be useful. … Although seeing all long sentences in a vertical list and being able to jump to them in the document just by clicking on the Find Results is actually pretty cool… :–)

Compare this with the first two pages of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The text by Conrad has Flesch Reading Ease of 66,4, which I think means, it's easer to understand or read than my post above! That doesn't make much sense.

Thank you for reminding me about this feature, Þorvarður. I just checked my latest document, and the longest sentence has 62 words (or actually 58, since four words ending in a colon were included in the count). I will certainly use this feature once in a while to help limiting myself when my writing becomes too eager.

That indeed is seriously cool, and something I'm going to start using forthwith.

Like many people, I imagine, I often get into routines with software, using only the functions I know and never bothering to explore other ones.

Long live Nisus!

I use this feature a lot, as I work with a lot of people/families for whom English is not their first language. When I need to write for a general audience in English, I try to keep the grade level below 8. To do this, I often find I need to make sentences shorter as I tend to write in very long sentences, and often find simpler diction. It goes a long way to make my work more effective.

I'm glad to learn that people are finding this tool in Nisus Writer Pro. I requested this tool about 25 years or so ago when writing the Nisus documentation. I was concerned that I was writing run-on sentences and thought such a tool might help me find and correct them. And indeed that has beeen the case.

Hello Mark,

Glad to see you're back.
The forums cannot be searched anymore. As an official Nisus person, do you think you might be able to fix the problem?

Thank you.

I don't think private messages are working, either. My last two messages seem to be stuck in the outbox.

It might be worth ringing some alarm bells regarding your support and info email addresses. Are they still current? Email to them is not apparently answered.

Seeing Nisus in Summerfest was a nice glimmer of hope.

I have also noticed this. I sent MichaelGli two private messages because I wanted to help him with opening his old Nisus files, but I never got any reply; I also notice that both messages just stay in the outbox and never make it to the "Sent messages" box.

I'm going to send you a private message now. Let us know in about half an hour from now whether you received it or not.

Best wishes,
Þorvarður

PS
Since a week or two, I can't access the Mellel forum. Have you also noticed this?

Got it and replied - thanks for the test.

The Mellel forum has a an odd thing in their Cloudflare setup. There is a fairly new human verification step. When I log in, I get redirected to the "http" version of their URL with a security token in the URL.

The non-secure URL goes to a more primitive looking version of their site and I don't think some features work from there. I reported it a while back. In the meantime, if I land in http-land I just prefix the URL with https:// and reload.

Aside from that, I haven't seen any problems. Clearing your browser cache might help.

Good luck, and nice hearing from you.

Thank you for the confirmation. Good to know that this feature is not broken.

It seems a private message stays in the Outbox until a reply is received. Because you replied to my private message I see my message is now no longer in the Outbox but has been moved to "Sent messages".

Thanks again for the confirmation and
all the best to you,

I have no problem at all to access the Mellel forum. They have implemented a security feature that checks if you are a real person or a bot before forwarding you to the actually forum. Has been working without any problems every time I have been »checked». Try another web browser.

Yes Peter, you are right. It's my old Safari (High Sierra) that is having difficulties with the Cloudflare verification.

I logged in with Firefox, and that worked.
Thanks for the tip. :–)
