Incorrect tabs on imported RTF file (NWX 2.1)

Post by xraydoc »

I'm using NWX 2.1 and it wont open/import a standard RTF file correctly - the file is formatted with multiple tabs, yet the tabs don't import correctly (most are missing, some are out of place) when opened in NWX.

The file *does* open correctly in TextEdit, Word and Mellel.

Any thoughts?? I'd really prefer to use NWX.

Yes, tabs are still broken in 2.1.1

While I'm not having the same trouble you are exactly, tabs have not worked correctly for me in any iteration of NWE 2.x. The problem I've noted, and reported via the bug reporting sheet and in this forum, is that tabs applied to styles are not saved as part of the style when the document is saved. For example, you can edit the NisusNew.dot template and put tabs into the styles that you want. However, once you save NisusNew.dot and then open a new file based on the template, tabs are no longer with the style. The same is true of regular documents. This problem makes NWE much less useful for me because I use equations extensively in my writing. The equation needs to be centered and the equation number right justified, but since they don't stick, I have to put them in by hand...

Hello everyone:

I am not able to reproduce either of your problems exactly. Perhaps you could try to come up with a series of steps I could follow to see what you are experiencing? You could submit this via the "Report a Bug..." menu (formally Send Feedback..) in the Help menu if you need to attach a file. Here is what I did to try it out:
  1. 1. Open a new File.
    2. Switch to the Style Sheet view and insert two tabs in the Heading 1 style. The first tab is at 2in and is left aligned. The second tab is at 3in and is right aligned.
    3. Switch to the Page View, choose the Heading 1 style and type "[tab][tab]Heading 1"
    4. Save and reopen the file
The tabs are still in place.

My problem isn't with style sheets AFAIK. I didn't really define any.

I created a document in Mellel, formatted in to various columns via tabs I added to the ruler (something like 6 different tab stops at 1/4" distances).

I saved/exported the document as an RTF. TextEdit and Word both open the file with my specified tab stops intact. And reimporting the RTF file in to Mellel also shows the proper tabs.

Nisus Writer 2.1 (and 2.1.1) doesn't respect the tab stops specified in the document. It just uses the tabs specified in the NWX default .dot file.

I have not defined any style sheets at all.

I can forward the file to you (Nisus) if you think it would help.

I had reported this problem via the NWE feedback mechanism and Mark Hurvitz reports that it has been duplicated and is being worked on. Here is Mark's reply and my original report:

rwa1,

I'm sorry you experience difficulties with Nisus Writer Express.

Indeed, we noticed this the other day. We have an engineer working on it. I can't, however, give you an Estimated Time of Arrival for a fix.

Tabs are not saved in style sheets, either the Nisus New.dot or in individual files. Do the following:

1. from preferences, open up the Nisus New.dot template.

2. Select style view and add a centered tab stop to Normal at 3.25" and a right tab stop at 6.5".

3. return to page view. Normal now has tab stops -- hooray.

4. Save and close the document, then repopen it again. The existing paragraph in page view has tab stops.

5. BUT, go to the style view and look at Normal. NO TAB STOPS!! and all styles based on Normal have also lost their tabs.

6. Return to page view and add a new paragraph based on normal -- NO TAB STOPS!!

---------------------------------------------

Another problem involving tabs: Tabs in List text which is "out-dented" so that the number "hangs out" to the left of the fully justified text do not work correctly, still. If the paragraph has no tabs, then the first press of the tab key in the first line of the paragraph moves the cursor to the left margin (i.e., where the second and subsequent lines of text are aligned). This is expected behavior. However, if you put tabs in the list style (like my example above, which is needed for correct alignment of equations in text), the first press of the tab key in the first line takes the cursor to the first explicit tab stop (centered at 3.25" in the above example) completely by-passing the left text margin for the second and subseqent lines. This makes it impossible to line up text correctly unless you also put a left tab stop at the left margin. NW classic handled this situation correctly as does Word.
