Disappearing characters

I am trying out the NWE demo (I was a longtime Nisus Writer user, and still have the old dongel....). While it isn't quite up to speed for regular use yet (no footnotes and no Arabic support yet), it seems pretty good so far.

However, I do have 2 problems.

1. the ligature function does not seem to be working. I have tried using it for all and for just selected text, but nothing happens. This is so even with simple "fi" ligatures and more complex ones, such as "ffl"

2. I have tried to format a text in Unicode, but NWE doesn't seem to understand it. If I click to insert various glyphs from the Character Palette, they are inserted but immediately disappear after I begin typing normally. If I paste them in, they disapear as well. I am using standard OpenType fonts from Adobe, though I have the same problem with Apples Unicode fonts.

Just wondering.

I'm having problems with this too. No trouble with Apple's fonts, but Adobe OpenType fonts seem to have the ligatures turned off.

Is there a way/format that will make opentype fonts work?
