I'm not sure when this began happening, but now when I start NWE the last doc I had open appears automatically. My prefs are set to have nothing appear when I start the app. How can I get back to the app opening & nothing else?
Look at your general preferences again. Underneath the section "on activation" where you can specify what you want to happen when you launch NWE, there are three more check boxes labeled "Document Options." My guess is that you need to uncheck the third one, 'Reopen previously opened documents on launch.'
David has hit the solution. It's been suggested that we move that "on launch" option up to be closer to the "on activation" options. I think maybe those people were right
