Headers
Headers
When I hand in my writing assignments they have to be layed out a certain way. I have to have my name, address, student #, on one the left.... my assignment #, instructor and word count on the right. This needs to be put on the first page of each assignment. The second page need only consist of my name, assignment #, date (on left) page number (on right). I wanted to create a template for each assignment but found I can't add a second page without having actual text. Also noticed that when I do have more than 2 pages the header stays the same for all pages. Is there a way I can change the header for each page?
Try this.
1. In a new document, open the tool drawer (if it's closed).
2. Click the icon for the fourth palette group (page).
3. If the Sections palette is minimized, click its title bar (anywhere but on the X).
4. Under "Header and Footer," check "Different First Page."
5. Click in the first-page header area and create boilerplate for your page-one header.
6. Click back in the body of the document.
7. In the menu bar click Insert > Page Break (command-enter).
8. Type a letter, any letter, say "x." (This might not be necessary, but it seemed to be in earlier versions.)
9. Click in the header area of the second page.
10. Create boilerplate for the header for subsequent pages.
11. Click back in the body of the document.
12. Delete the "x" and the page break.
13. Make any other formatting changes.
14. In the menu bar, click File > Save As.
15. Click the field next to File Format and choose Document Template.
16. Give it a name, assign it a location.
17. Click the Save button.
18. Close the document.
19. Open the document you created (as a New File).
20. Type your assignment.

Happy to help. Your response made me wonder whether there are official names for those buttons, so I checked the new 2.5 user guide and learned that I should have called it the Document button.Dlee wrote:Only place I got lost was "click the icon for the 4th palette (page)" That threw me off a little but I figured that out.
