Chinese Input Problem

Post by Timothy Huang »

I tried the new 2.5 alphas, and found a problem when I keyin Chinese text (using Hanin input provided by Apple) in these alphas.

While I still have a line of inputting text, (meaning I did not hit the return key to commit the final input text yet), and found there is a correction that I have to make in this text stream, say, the third character from the very last one, I can not move the input cursor to the correct position (by arrow key). The input cursor will stay at the very end. However, by moving the input cursor blindly, it is possible to make the necessary input correction.

But, without be able to see where the input cursor is, it is a pain to use. This is not a problem on 2.1x, but on all 2.5 alphas I tried (a4, a5, and a6).

Please fix this.

Hi Timothy, thanks for spotting this bug. It will be fixed in the next build we release.

Also, since version 2.5 is still in the alpha stages, we would appreciate it if you could tell us about bugs it contains by either:
1. Sending us a report using the "Report a Bug" menu under "Help".
2. Post a message to the thread dedicated to version 2.5

This way people looking for help with the current version won't have to sort through threads that don't apply to them. Thank you.

many Chinese difficulties

Post by dpb »

I am still using v. 2.1.3. Not only are there very serious problems with the Chinese input methods, but quite a number of characters seem to crash the program when entered. Even when pasted in from other programs, they do not always remain visible - they disappear and reappear sporadically.

I'd be very happy to test a pre-release version, once an attempt has been made to repair some of these problems. For now, I am unable to rely on NWX for documents using Chinese.

dpb: Except for the keyboard navigation issue that Timothy described above, Chinese input should not have any problems in alpha 6. If you are running Tiger (10.4) give the alpha a try and let us know if you have any troubles:

Why Tiger?

Post by dpb »

Thanks; I intend to do that. But I can't try the alpha till I upgrade to Tiger, and I can't do that until I am able to upgrade other software I use. Any reason why all the new versions of NWX require Tiger? I have a G5, but may not be able to install Tiger on my laptop at all...

I'm using alpha 6 under Panther (10.3.9) without any noticeable problem. I've placed it in a subfolder so that I could return to 2.1.3 if I had any problems. I think you can safely download it and see whether it works for you.

Thanks for your encouragement. It does indeed seem to work, for the most part.
