Paragraph styles and spacing

Post by ProfT »

I'm running the demo to see if NWX will work for me. On the whole it has been great, but I've encountered an oddity in doing something very simple -- writing a business letter.

When I go to enter my address and the address of the recipient, the default spacing after each line is 6pt. I can change it manually, but I can't find a keystroke or command that will allow for a new line without creating a new paragraph!! Is this a) a glitch b) a feature on the list of things to be added c) hidden or d) very easily fixed and I just haven't managed it yet??

Thanks!

Hi Mike:

Currently Nisus Writer Express does not support line breaks without starting a new paragraph. However, you can create a letter template with the appropriate formatting setup for you. Do the following:

1. Open a new document and choose the "Style Sheet" view from the View menu.

2. Once the style sheet is open, click on the Plus button in the upper right hand corner and choose "Paragraph Style." This will create a new paragraph style.

3. Name the new paragraph style something like "Address" and hit RETURN.

4. Look at the selection "Based On" that appears right below the style name. Make sure it says "Normal". If not. click on the arrows and choose Normal.

5. Now, with your new paragraph style selected, change the after paragraph spacing to 0.

6. Switch back to your preferred view for writing by clicking on "Page View" or "Draft View" in the view menu.

7. Now, save the document as a template. Choose "Save As", give your file a name and choose "Document Template" for the file type.

In the future, you can write new letters just by opening this file, which will create a new blank letter for you. Use the "Address" style for your to and from addresses and use Normal for your body text (where you do want to have the paragraph spacing).

If you really want to be fancy, create two styles: Sender and Recipient. Both will have 0 after paragraph spacing, but the Sender can be right aligned.

Thanks so much! Part of what attracted me to NWX was the flexibility to customize and the interactive support! Looks like I'll be needing a license for this demo :D
