Is there a shortcut key for switching between active windows..?

It depends on your keyboard and language, but Command+~ usually does this. It's an OS shortcut, and works on most applications.

In OS X 10.4.8, PB G4,English, the shortcut is Command and "`" either pressed simultaneously or in sequence.

You can find and activate the shortcut in the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference Pane under Keyboard Navigation: Move focus to next window in active application.
