font problems

I'm having problems with fonts in Nisus . If I select say symbol and type, I do not get symbols (also a couple of other fonts like dingbats) with more text type fonts I clearly see changes in font as I select but most of the symbol, image types fonts seem to give normal characters instead of the expected symbol. I can use character pallet to get the symbol into the text but not that convenient. So far in surfing I've not seen a similar problem. I appear to see a similar problem in Textedit, and maybe a couple of others, but not in word 2004.

Any hints?

Running Nisus 2.6.1 (don't remember this problem in some earlier versions, but don't know when it started). Mac OSX (10.4.6)
