copy and paste to find

I frequently have trouble copying from a doc to the find dialogue box when I want to remove hidden characters from a document. At the moment, for example, I have a document that was emailed to me as text with hidden carriage returns of some sort. I want to remove these, but when I copy the relevant blank line from the document and paste it in the "find" dialogue box, no occurrences are found in the document. How can this be, if I'm searching for something that I've copy pasted from the document itself?
