spell check problems

Post by Bart »

I didn't try checking my spelling until today. I opend the spell checking window and all seems to go well, until I noticed, near the end of the document, that I was getting the same errors again and again; some I wanted to ignore (odd family names), some I wanted to correct (I was given the right word straight away, after all), but neither command seemed to work. After several futile rounds the spinning colour wheel appeared and I had to kill NWE by hand. After relaunching the program the same error occurred, so I decided to give up, and spell check myself the old-fashioned way.

Any suggestions anyone? Or is this just another bug waiting to be straightened out in NWE 2.1.2?

spell checker problems and limitations

The spell checker is a definite minus for Nisus Express; it lost functionality from Nisus writer.

The lack of a "change all' or "ignore all" command for spellchecking is nuisance.

I am also experiencing bugs that sometimes delete characters following the replaced incorrect word. That usually happens only when the replacement is longer than the original. it deletes commas, spaces and sometimes the initial letter or two of the following word.

I finally have identified the nature of the spell-check bug that makes other characters disappear. Check through the doment using COMMAND-;, and when you come to a typo with two or more possible choices hit COMMAND-OPTION-; to replace the misspelling. You get a drop-down list. Hit the scroll arrows to go down, then hit the UP arrow to return up, Jump back and forth, and each cycle one character after the word being replaced disappears. I tried it with SYSTESM and another word with three possible corrections, and each cycle a charaacter after the word being corrected disappeared.

Any spell checking error that introduces errors the user may not notice is a serious bug. This and occasional spinning pizza delays have made me reconsider my use of Nisus Express.

I also miss the change/ignore all. Sometimes I work with OCR scanning output and then NWE simply is unusable.

Other bug:
I just installed a new disk in my mac and came across (small) a bug in NWE 2.1.1: When I opened an old 7 page document, Nisus was popping up 149 consecutive dialog boxes saying "Alert: Couldn't contact spell checker - [OK]" In my prefs that spell checker is CocoAspell, which is not installed yet. After I had responded to all those dialogs, NWE froze... Obviously NWE should stop nagging after the first "ok".
