Sample-Files?

Post by maex »

Hi,

are there any sample-files, where someone can "study" the features of Nisus Writer Pro?

Hopefully this isn't a double post. I got called away at just the wrong time earlier today.

I agree, sample files would be nice. The user manual as a native Nisus RTF file would be great.

In the meantime, use the Nisus user manual as a reference. Exercise one feature at a time. It won't take long before you have your black belt in Nisus.

Leave things like macros and perl until after you learn the core product.

The most important thing, at least as I see it, is to learn how styles work. Styles are key to consistent appearance but they do much more.

You can adapt your document to different needs just by swapping style sets. For instance, you want to write in Helvetica, single spaced. Your editor wants double spaced Times New Roman. Save a second copy of your style set with appropriate paragraph styles set to double spaced and their associated character styles to Times New Roman. You can flip back and forth by swapping style sets.

Happy writing!

I'm not aware of any official sample files, so I support Amontillado's suggestion to provide the User Manual, or at least a part of it, as a sample file in RTF format.

There is a video by James Tummins available which introduces Nisus to new users. It covers (1) Working Environment, (2) Using Styles, (3) Find & Replace, (4) Navigating & Organizing, (5) Hyperlinks, (6) Revisions & Comments.

You can also take a look at Loulesko's "Novel Manuscript Template"

The FAQ-site is also good, especially for troubleshooting:

Thanks for your answer, Amontillado.

Because of the style sets (and the formatting examiner) I've buy Nisus Writer. I think (and hope), this is more powerful than other products (though Mellel seems to be at the same class). But I'm still learning - and therefore I'd like a good sample file.

BTW In the meantime I've found one: By the help-menu there is the macro reference in zrtf-format.

(Applying style sets) -> Do I understand right? There is a possibilty to apply a whole style set to a file to change all of the formatting at once - and switch all at once back? (e.g. this is possible with the layout-app "MarkStein Publisher")

How do I proceed? I didn't found this in the manual yet. Copying the dot-file in /Docmanager/Style Library and adjust the styles with the same style name but other formatting?

Hi Þorvarður,

thank you for your answer.

I've already take a (little) look at the "Novell Manuscript Template". I think, there are multiple issues where I can learn from. :-) I'll "study" it furthermore.

Yes, you can do that with macros. You should discuss that in the Macros Forum.
How do I proceed?
You can use different methods to reach the same goal, but first you should tell us what you want to do exactly and why.

I replied, but it's not appearing.

Macros are not necessarily needed.

If you have a document you want to appear three different ways, have three style sets each with the same style names. Define the styles in those three sets differently according to your needs.

In View->Styles, use Import to load a new style set. In the case of wanting to replace style definitions, choose the option to overwrite existing styles instead of renaming them. That will make your document change appearance according to style set loaded.

You are right, Amontillado. I was just going to correct myself, but you were faster. :–)
However, there are some very good style macros available that help automate things. My favorite is "Remove Unused Styles & add My Styles". This is good for cleaning up Word files and add styles from my own library to the files.
