Squirrely Table Behavior

Post by apetersonsd »

I've been ready to ditch Microsoft Word for a long time and make something else my primary wp app - so long as that something else is good enough. That's why I ponied up the cash for NWE and am prepared to give it a long-term serious try.

I thought an interesting experiment would be to recreate my MSW resume in NWE. I use a lot of tables in my resume (and in Word docs in general). I like the formatting flexibility tables give, and I've become pretty adept at using them.

Unfortunately, I ran into trouble pretty quickly in NWE. I searched the forum here for posts on tables and didn't find anything resembling what I'm running into, so here goes.

NWE apparently automatically inserts a paragraph mark above a table when you create one. When you're trying to do a one-page resume and are constrained for space, this is a serious shortcoming. After numerous attempts, I have concluded that it's impossible to select the paragraph character above the table (so as to either delete it or resize it down to a nice, managable 1 or 2-pts) by itself. Clicking on the paragraph character automatically selects the whole damn table. Ugh! I don't know if this is inadvertent or intentional on the part of the Nisus coders, but in my opinion it should be done away with. Why insert a paragraph character at all? If I want one, I'll just hit the damn return key.

That said, let me just add that I'm favorably disposed toward NWE and I think it's off to a decent start. I love the interface, I love how you've handled the headers and footers, and the ability to put gradients in individual table cells is really cool. I suppose it'll just take awhile for NWE to mature.

I also suppose there will be pressure from your loyal users to add more and more of their favorite features, with the end result potentially being another monstrosity ala Word. Hope that doesn't happen.

Anyway, please, no automatic insertion of paragraph marks above tables. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Regards,

Andy

Hi Andy-- We're aware of the frustration the automatic insertion has caused our users. And indeed, currently there is no way for the user to remove it. Clearing this annoyance is definitely on the list of fixes for next release.
