El Capitan Compatibility

El Capitan, or OS X 10.11, has been released and we know many of you are already using it. So it is probably a good time to talk about compatibility with our apps.

The latest versions of Nisus Writer Express and Nisus Writer Pro are compatible, apart from one issue. Hopefully Apple will fix that bug shortly.

The current version of InfoClick (1.1) will not by default detect email in El Capitan. We currently have a workaround but a newer version of InfoClick (1.2) will fix this issue. We hope to have InfoClick 1.2 released very soon.

Nisus Thesaurus is compatible with no reported issues.

If you do find a problem please let us know by sending an email to support or through the feedback reporter (Help > Send Feedback) within our apps.

I work in a small office of about 6 users who all use Nisus Writer. I maintain all of the office computers and upgraded two of the 6 to El Capitan about a month ago. Almost immediately those two users started experiencing Nisus crashes when trying to open *some* Nisus existing documents. The crash manifests immediately upon attempting to open.

We have thousands of Nisus files, and I have been unable to determine which characteristics of the files cause the crash, but it is 100% repeatable on those files. Of our existing files, I would guess that perhaps 10% cause the crash. Users on pre-OS 10.11 continue to open these “crash files” as usual. Interestingly, if a user who is able to open the file does so and copies/pastes the content to a *new* Nisus document, the 10.11 users are then able to edit the text.

Because of our heavy usage of Nisus, I have halted OS upgrades until this issue is resolved.

Hello Adam, we communicated about this issue privately, and resolved it, but I wanted to post a quick reply here too.

Your issues were triggered by a bad interaction between the text layout engine on Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan and Nisus Writer’s automatic page numbers. Any documents with automatic page numbers in the headers or footers could cause troubles.

We have a fix in store for the next update to Nisus Writer, which should be available soon.
