Nisus® Software Newsletter

In this letter:

Greetings From Nisus Land
"More Stories About Food And Me"

Lately I've been accused of making this newsletter all about me. I'm not sure why this is happening, but let me tell you a little story about me.

As I was eating a caesar salad at 5:30 in the morning in a Las Vegas Strip restaurant I had an epiphany. I'm doing this all wrong! I should be eating breakfast at this time of day! Once I figured that out it all came together to make me the success I am today.

What's the takeaway from this story? I had to fill three paragraphs.

Anyway, in this newsletter I'm going to reveal what we have been working on lately. There will also be other filler and more stories about food and me.

What We Are Working On

Many, many times we are asked "what are you working on?" Normally we don't like to talk about what we are working on because plans can change, and we don't want to talk about something only to not deliver it.

Having said that, I can tell you what we have been working on for the past few months. First of all, we are adding support for 64 bit. Why does that matter? It matters because 64 bit applications can use more memory than their 32 bit counterparts (32 bit apps can address up to 4GB of ram).

In the real world, most people will never hit that 4GB limit. However, there are some users who will, and this is for them. There are additional benefits to 64 bit. Modern Mac hardware is natively 64 bit. Apple's developer tools and frameworks all prioritize 64-bit apps. There are certain OS X features an app cannot use unless it is 64-bit. It's a matter of being in harmony with current technology.

The other thing we are currently working on is iCloud support. This is good news if you are a Mac App Store customer. iCloud support is only for those who purchase from the Mac App Store. For those who bought directly from us, we are thinking about other solutions to keep your documents in the cloud. To go along with iCloud support comes sandboxing. As this article states, “… sandboxing refers to compartmentalizing what data and features a specific app is granted access to; apps each can metaphorically play exclusively in their own sandbox, accessing only that data which Apple has granted that app entitlements to see.”

Sandboxing is both good and bad. I don’t have the space to cover all of the arguments, but the upshot is that while a sandboxed app is safer, that safety could theoretically come at the expense of certain features. We aren’t likely to cut features, however. Sandboxing is required for the Mac App Store, and we are probably going to distribute a sandboxed version directly if this can be done with a minimum of trouble for our users.

OK, so that's what is currently being worked on. There is currently no timetable for the release of an update containing one or more of these features. We just wanted to let you newsletter subscribers know we aren't just counting our money on a beach somewhere in the South Pacific ocean.

We'll do that later. Right now, there is work to be done.

Nisus Writer Pro
"Tools Of The Trade"

Joe Kissell of TidBits fame has written a very nice article on Nisus Writer Pro for Macworld. Called “Tools of the trade: Why I prefer Nisus Writer” Joe goes on to explain why he prefers Nisus Writer Pro over MS Word or Apple’s Pages and how it helps both his productivity and his attitude toward writing.

I may be exaggerating a bit, but this is perhaps the greatest article ever written!

If you would like to learn more about Nisus Writer Pro you can download the demo from our Pro download page. If you would like to purchase Pro, you can do so at our store. You'll be glad you did.
