In this letter:

Greetings From Nisus Land
"Nisus Writer Express Update"

Now that Pro is getting ready to leave the nest, we are beginning work on the next version of Express. I can't really disclose too much at this point, but I will talk about a few things.

Express 3.0 will have the following features:

Also included will be numerous fixes and enhancements. That annoying message stating that your notes are too long will no longer appear. There are other examples, but that's the only one I could think of at the moment.

Nisus Writer Express 3.0 will show itself after Pro is released. We don't have pricing to announce at the moment, but I can say that it probably won't differ too much from what we are charging currently. There will be an upgrade price, but I am sure it won't break the bank.

That's all I going to say for now. I am already going to get in trouble, but it's part of the job, you know?

Nisus Writer Pro
"Download the future, right now!"

Thave I told you about the Nisus Writer Pro public beta? Yes? Well, I am going to tell you again, so you can just deal with it!

The newest member of the family, Nisus Writer Pro, brings new features such as Table of Contents, Indexing, Bookmarks, Widow and Orphan control, Cross References, Line Numbering, enhanced Footnotes and Endnotes, and Text Wrap around images.

We have also brought back some Classic Nisus Writer features, such as Glossaries, attribute sensitive Find and Replace, and for you macro folks out there, an upgraded Nisus Macro Language.

You can download the beta from our Nisus Writer Pro page.

You will need a PowerPC G3, G4, G5 and Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later (Mac OS X 10.4.x is recommended).

Now for the disclaimers: Remember that this is beta software, and still in development. Bad things could happen to valuable documents, so please use appropriate caution. Please read the release notes before using.

We do not provide technical support on beta software, so use this product at your own risk.

If you like, you can send us feedback using the "Send Feedback" feature, which is located under the "Help" menu in Nisus Writer Pro. Your feedback makes the product better, so please feel free to send it to us.

So, if you haven't done it yet, download the beta, send us feedback, and most importantly, enjoy!

Tips and Tricks
"How To Set Up Your Default Language"

Rock Strongo here, and since I haven't done that much work, I am certainly looking forward to the long weekend here in the US. I know we just had a long weekend, but I am taking another one.

Before I leave for Mexico, though, I will leave you with a tip.

Mr. Jonathan Smith-Smythe Jones writes:

"Dear Sirs and Mr. Strongo,

I am distressed that I cannot spell check in my native language, which happens to be English. The proper kind, of course: British English.

How do I set up this up in Express?"

Well Mr. Jones, here is how you do this.

By default, Express (and Pro, when it ships) has US English as the default language. But, you live in the United Kingdom. You don't want to spell in our crazy version of English! You want to spell color the proper way, as in colour. How do you set this up in Express/Pro?

Simple, Jonesy, if I may call you that. You set the language in the Nisus New File.

  1. Choose Preferences from the Nisus Writer Pro menu.
  2. Click New File in the bar across the top.
  3. Click Format (if it is not already selected) in the tabs at the top of the New File preferences.
  4. In the Character portion of the dialog choose English (British) from the Language pop-up menu. If you do not see this language in your list, you can add it by opening Preferences>Languages and clicking the More... button.
  5. Close the Preferences window.
  6. Choose New from the File menu.

Now type a word in "proper" English, say neighbourhood. The spelling checker should not flag that word.

Disclaimer: This tip applies to new documents only.
