Greetings From Nisus Land
"After Macworld Rumblings"
Can you believe I just spent three weeks in the Employee Prison? Apparently, I didn't show enough "enthusiasm" at Macworld last month. How am I supposed to be enthusiastic when my "hotel" consists of a cot with three legs in the Panhandle? I didn't even get to do any panhandling there! It's ok though, I got even. I upgraded by sleeping in our Macworld booth. Suckers.
Speaking of Macworld, did anyone else find the Keynote to be ... well, odd, for lack of a better term? I mean, it is MACworld. Where was the Mac part of the keynote? They could have called it iPhone world, you know?
There was no iLife, iWork, or talk of Leopard. Where was Leopard? Nowhere, that's where.
The worst part is that there were no good freebies to speak of. No posters, keychains, flashlights, or mints. Just CDs, flyers, and promoting your product. Where is the flash in that? Look, if this trend continues, I am going to have to bring some money with me, instead of my usual plan of selling the freebies on the street.
Ok, enough ranting. It's almost nap time, and I need to go get my juice box.
It's tough working here, I am telling you!
Nisus Writer Pro
"The New Kid On The Block"
I would love to give you all an update on Nisus Writer Pro. So I will. We (not me, but people who actually work) are working hard to make this first public release as solid as possible. Features are frozen (this means that there will be no more features in this version. Probably.) and bugs are being threatened, yelled at, and squashed like ... well, bugs. We hope to have a public beta released this month, but don't hold us to that. Unforeseen things often happen in software development.
For those of you who do not know what I am writing about, Nisus Writer Pro is built on the core of Nisus Writer Express. We have added many new features, and a few old favorites. Features like Table of Contents, Indexing, Bookmarks, Cross References, Small Caps support, Widow and Orphan Control, and Text Wrap Around Images.
Old favorites include attribute sensitive Find & Replace, Line Numbering, Glossaries, and many, many additions to the Nisus macro language.
We have also spent a lot of time on notes. Footnotes now span multiple pages and there have been a number of options added to control the display of note styles.
You will need at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 to use Pro. Pricing should be announced soon, and Pro should be released in late Winter/early Spring.
To read more about Pro, visit our new Nisus Writer Pro page.
Nisus Writer Express
"New Lower Pricing"
In case you missed it, we have lowered the price on Nisus Writer Express. The full version is now $45, the family pack is $79, and the academic version is $39. CD versions of these versions are $10 extra.
You can order Express from our handy Nisus Writer Express ordering page.
Now I can truly say with a straight face that Express is an even better value than before!
Take Control of OS X Backups
"Don't Let This Happen To You!"
Let's be honest: How many of us backup our data? I do, but I learned to do it the hard way. I didn't think it would happen to me, and sure enough, the hard drive in my computer failed, and I was stuck. Luckily, at the time I had nothing of value on the drive, like photos or music.
A few years later, I backup on a daily basis, so my photos, music, movies, ramblings, and other stuff are not lost.
But, how do you choose the right tool for you? What strategy do you use to backup? Are you waiting to use Time Machine when Leopard appears, or some of the current tools available now?
Well, Joe Kissell, former Nisus employee, current TidBits contributor, backup expert, and all around swell guy, gives you valuable, straightforward advice in the 2nd edition of his eBook, Take Control of Mac OS X Backups. The cost is only $10.00, but if you use the special link below, you can save 30 percent, which brings the cost to only $7.00. Joe won't like this, nor will my Bookie, but this isn't about Joe or my Bookie. It's about backing up.
Here is that special link Take Control of OS X Backups.Don't let what happened to me happen to you. Buy this book, develop a strategy, and backup your valuable stuff!
