In this letter:

Greetings From Nisus Land
"Apple Computer Turns 30"

On April 1st, Apple Computer Inc. turns 30 years old. Some might say that starting Apple on that date is irony at its finest. I would say ... who cares, it's just a day. Silly people.

Anyway, these guys (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) were selling "Blue Boxes", a device that tricked the phone network into letting people make long distance calls for free, according to a CNET article. Now Jobs runs Apple, Pixar, and some say Disney eventually. Not bad for a guy that appeared in public wearing a bow tie in the 70's and 80's.

For those interested, there are histories of Apple Computer on these pages:

Apple at 30

CNET

Of course, none of us would be reading this if Apple Computer did not exist. We would still be playing Pong and using punch cards for computer dating and tic-tac-toe. What a scary, scary world, eh?

So while you are enjoying your weekend, remember to raise your mouse in honor of Apple's birthday.

Now back to fighting with my Intel iMac.

April Fool's Weekend Sale
"Save on Nisus Writer Express!"

It's very rare for me to do this, but I cannot stay silent anymore. My conscience is getting the best of me, and for the good of the nation I must speak out.

One of our engineers, whom I will not identify (but his real name is Martin Q. Handsome) has, for a number of years, abused the "Take a penny, leave a penny" tray at our local convenience store. At times, he will take as many as 3 pennies, and he doesn't give any back! This is the most egregious abuse I have ever seen in my 95 years on this planet. This man simply must be stopped!

Now that this unpleasantness has been addressed, we can get down to business. From now until April 5th, we are throwing an April Fools Day sale. We are discounting Nisus Writer Express, our mulitlingual, Universal Binary word processor for Mac OS X. Here are the sale prices:

Remember, this sale will end on April 5th, 2006.

This is not an April Fool's joke. Really. There will be plenty of time for that later.

Tips and Tricks
"Moving Classic Nisus Files"

Rock Strongo here, and by the time you read this, I will be on an April Fools Day bender. Take that, intervention team!

Snrub Jocko of Madison, WI, writes "I have more than a few old Nisus Writer files that I want to move to a new machine. But, when I transfer them using my USB drive, they look odd on the new machine. It says it is a Unix Executable file. Oh Nisus man, what do I do?"

Many of you have written, and some of you rather poorly I might add, that you are having similar trouble. Unfortunately, they do not let me answer email in lockup, but now that I am free, I can answer this question.

Classic Nisus Writer files have resource forks that store your formatting information. OS X does support this, but PC formatted drives, such as USB keydrives, iPods (yes, iPods), and other such drives do not support this. So what do you do?

Well, I will tell you. If you need to move these files via a PC formatted drive, you can simply reformat the drive using Disk Utility, which comes with the operating system. However, that may not be possible for you to do for whatever reason. In that case, just put these files in a folder and either archive them using the system's built in archiver (.zip) or use DropStuff (Stuffit.com) to compress these files. Then you can put them on your PC formatted USB drive and unstuff or unzip them once they are moved to the new location.

I hope this helps, because, due to pending court appearances, I have no idea when I will be able to answer these questions again.
