Grettings From Nisus Land
"A Big Thank You"

I am not going to write a whole lot this time because my feet hurt. However, I did want to say thank you for all of the nice emails, phone calls, and comments on such web sites as Versiontracker.com and MacUpdate.com regarding Express 2.5. Each and every one of those is greatly appreciated.

For those of you who have not joined the Express 2.5 bandwagon, you are absolutely missing out. That's because Express 2.5 adds significant new features such as right to left input (for languages such as Arabic and Hebrew), bullets and numbering, support for LinkBack (this is a very cool feature!), support for opening WordPerfect Mac documents, and many bug fixes and enhancements.

You can download this new version from here.

You can read about what's been added and fixed on this page.

The cost of Nisus Writer Express 2.5 is only $69.95 for the download version, $10.00 more plus shipping for the CD. The Express Family Pack (three licenses) is only $109.95, the Family Pack upgrade is $50.00.

Previously licensed owners of Nisus Writer Express are able to upgrade to the latest version for free.

So don't be shy, join in the fun.

Nisus On The Web
"The Tech Night Owl Talks to and about Nisus"

Gene Steinberg, best-selling Mac author and columnist, talks to Jerzy Lewak, CEO of Nisus Software on his internet radio show, The Tech Night Owl Live. Sure, there are other guests on this show, but we don't know who they are, or why they are there. I guess to fill in time before Jerzy comes on, or a friend of the producers. Who knows? (Adam, I am kidding you here. Really. Don't look at me like that!)

You can tune into the show, or download the podcast, from here:

Happy listening!

Tips and Tricks
"The Adventures of Don Diego de la Escribir"

Rock Strongo here, and while I normally like to write these tips, this time I was a bit too lazy. So, I had my new/old friend Don Diego de la Escribir relay his experiences with Express. In this tip, Don Diego talks about QuickFix, Menu Keys, Languages, and interestingly colored beer.

Take it away, Don!

I typed:

"Ian Beasley reached for teh beer mug he recieved from the bar-maid and saw something wierd."

I paused for the briefest moment, pressed COMMAND-SHIFT-U to switch my language to British English and continued typing. (The U, of course stands for UK... I had set my Language and Menu Keys preferences in advance.) Because Ian is British, I wanted his "accent" to be appropriate.

"Miss, I don't mean to belabor the point, but, could you please look at the color of my beer?"

I paused again, pressed COMMAND-OPTION-U switching back to American English (the U, of course stands for US) ready to continue my story when I glanced at my screen. I had indeed typed "teh" "recieved" "wierd" "belabor" and "color". However, what I saw on my screen had been quickly, seamlessly and transparently transformed by Nisus Writer Express to read:

"Ian Beasley reached for the beer mug he received from the bar-maid and saw something weird." and "Miss, I don't mean to belabour the point, but, could you please look at the colour of my beer?"

I sighed, took a sip of my water, did what I could to focus on the waves instead of the SUVs, and thanked the engineers at Nisus Software Inc. for implementing the QuickFix tool in their word processor.

From and earlier Nisus Newsletter tips I had learned about setting my Menu Key shortcut preferences to switch between languages. I had also added some of my "favorite" misspellings to the QuickFix preference. I'm not an electrician and hot water with a squeeze of lemon is my favorite drink, so I'm rarely wired. When I make the transposition of letters in that word I always mean "weird". I'm used to US spelling conventions, but Ian's dialog was to have Britishisms, so I added American/British spelling changes to the English (British) QuickFix list. Then, when I switched the language (which includes the associated QuickFix list) all my typing went smoothly.

I took another sip of my water as the roar of the sea drowned out the roar of an SUV.
