Grettings From Nisus Land
"Nisus Writer Express native file format explained. Or not."

So here I am, back again, trying to educate and empower. By that, I mean that my job with this newsletter is to let you know what separates Express from other word processors on the market.

Well, one thing that does move Express apart from the others is our use of RTF (Rich Text Format) as our "native" file format. The reason for that is simple: The RTF format is supported by just about every word processor out there, on just about every platform (Mac, Windows, and Linux). That means that you will be able to send your document to someone using a different word processor with (usually) minimal loss of formatting.

This is a wonderful thing for those of us who happen to live in the real world.

Now our engineers would tell you how difficult it is to write code to adhere to this format, but engineers are not normal, and they do not live in the real world.

Anyway, this is but one reason why you should take a close look at Nisus Writer Express. Another reason would be price. At just $59.95 for the download version Express makes for a compelling addition to a serious writers toolkit. There are many other purchase options available, including an academic version and a Family Pack (three licenses for $99.00).

To purchase Express, or to see what other features make Express a professional but easy to use word processor, visit our Nisus Writer Express web page.

Now please, use this newfound RTF power for good, instead of evil.

KeyFonts DX
"These fonts are good, and good looking!"

Mac OS X comes with dozens of fonts pre-installed for your writing pleasure. Well so what?!? There is no law that says that you can't add more fonts ... well, there might be in California, but most of you do not live here. Yet..

Having said that, if you are looking for quality fonts at a low price, you will want to look at KeyFonts DX. This CD has 3007 high quality Truetype - Western Latin 1 (CP 1252)/ANSI fonts for your writing pleasure.

The cost of this CD is $39.95 and this CD can purchased from the KeyFonts product page.

You can also preview those fonts, so you know what you are purchasing.

So add a little spice to your writing with KeyFonts DX. You may want to purchase a little Beano as well ... these fonts are very spicy.

"How to modify the keyboard shortcuts for styles"

This time, Rock Strongo would like to talk about his ever growing collection of half-chewed gum. That is a shame really, as what we are going to make him talk about is how to modify the keyboard shortcuts for styles.

Teve Torbes of Boston, Mass. sent us the following email: "How do I modify the keyboard shortcuts for my styles?"

Good question Teve, and with any luck, Rock will give you a coherent answer. If not, we will provide counseling and an interpreter.

The best way to modify the keyboard shortcuts for styles is in the Style Sheet view of the document. You may also need to remove certain shortcuts in the Nisus New File.

Try this:

Remove the command key shortcut from "Normal" in the Nisus New File.

  1. Choose Preferences from the Nisus Writer Express menu.
  2. Click New Document at the top of the Preferences dialog.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, then click Edit File.
  4. Choose Style Sheets from the View menu.
  5. Select the Normal Style.
  6. Select the Shortcut field.
  7. Press the Delete key.

However, you need to make sure you save the file correctly now, otherwise your efforts will be lost.

  8. Choose Save from the File menu.

That should do the trick.

Thanks, Rock.
