Paste into a table

Hello,
Firstly, I'm happy that NWE now has an easy way to make tables. My problem is that I often want to paste data from Excel or another source into a table and with the NWE I cannot do it. I start with a tab delimited set af data and go to the first cell and paste. Rather than distributing the data over the cells like most table programs do, all the data goes into the first cell after a note that you cannot make a table in a table.
Is there a way to paste a large amount to data into multiple cells and I'm missing it? If there is not currently a way to do this, I vote that it be given high priority for the next version of NWE.
Thank you,
Charlie Roth

Charlie,
Let's try it the other way.
1. Paste the tab-delimited data into the Nisus Writer Express document.
2. Select that text.
3. Choose Convert to Table from the Table menu.
Please let me know if that solves the problem.
Paste into a table - OK

Hi Mark,
Thank you for your helpful reply - yes, it works if I make a table from a tab delimited list. In many (most) cases, that will be good enough. Perhaps I'm just fixed in my ways, but I see the ability to paste data into a table as more intuitive.
Again, thank you for setting me on the right track.

Paste *THE* Table _not_ *INTO* a Table

Charlie,
I misunderstood your message and have learned more of the capabilities of the table tool of Nisus Writer Express.
A. When you select and copy a table in Excel
The Clipboard acts as though you have the
entire table (not just its "tab-delimited" contents). Therefore, when you paste that in to a Nisus Writer Express document, you simply paste it in. Do
not create a table first and try to paste that
table into a new table.
B. When you have actual tab-delimited text in your Clipboard
i. You can create a table that matches the number of columns and rows of data you have on your Clipboard. Select the range of columns and rows that match the contents of your Clipboard and choose Paste. Nisus Writer Express will distribute the data appropriately. (If you have a Return character selected at the end of the data, Nisus Writer Express will add an additional row.)
ii. However, still better, as I noted earlier (2004-10-21 14:50:12)...
1. Paste the tab-delimited data into the Nisus Writer Express document.
2. Select that text.
3. Choose Convert to Table from the Table menu.

My little table will not be pasted; it refuses ...

I select a range of cells in Excel, Copy the selection, go to my Nisus document and try to Paste. Nothing happens. Has anyone any ideas please?

Before trying to Paste into the NWX document, could you select the equivalent number of cells of the NWX table ?
Ex: if you paste a 5 X2 range of cells of an excel spreadsheet, firts select a 5 X 2 range of cells of you NWX table and then Paste
Is this tip work ?

Thanks for your suggestion Phil. But I was trying to select a section of a worksheet and paste directly into a blank page in Nisus.
I got around the obstacle by pasting it into a Word doc (!), then copying that to a Nisus doc....
Cheers
Chris

I got around the obstacle by pasting it into a Word doc (!)
In this case, I simply export the cells to a tab-delimited file. I open this file with TexEdit ; select all; paste in NWX; then "Convert to table" the pasting data
Like Mark's suggestion
Well, I must admit that, as I exchange EXCEL data with PC/MAC/UNIX guys for years, I have the habit to use the tab-delimited (or semi-colon) format for my EXCEL files !

Why don't you open the tab-delimited text file directly from within NWE and then apply the "Convert to table" feature?

Does the text you are trying to paste have any kind of special formatting? Are you also selecting charts or anything like that?
I paste from Excel directly into NWE all the time. It creates tables almost perfectly from them.

Charles thanks. I tried making a simple table in Excel and it pasted without trouble into NWE. The previous one must have had some sort of problem with it.

That's even a better suggestion than mine was.
