My document has too many pages on OS X 10.11, El Capitan

Post by martin »

If you recently updated to Mac OS X 10.11 "El Capitan" you may find that some existing documents have increased in length. For example, a document that paginated to 100 pages on OS X 10.10 may now paginate to 104 pages on OS X 10.11. This is a text display and layout phenomenon and does not mean that your document's content has been altered.

The cause of the problem is a bug in the text layout engine on OS X 10.11 that results in too much spacing. The layout engine incorrectly applies a paragraph's line spacing factor (aka: the line height multiple). All apps that make use of particular layout engine features are affected, including Apple's own TextEdit.

What factors trigger the bug?
The problem only affects paragraphs with their line spacing mode set to "multiple"; fixed line spacing does not appear to be affected. The larger the line spacing, the larger the error. For example, a line spacing of 1.5x may produce an error of 2% in a paragraph’s height, while double-spaced lines (2x spacing) might produce an error near 5%.

The bug is also only triggered by certain fonts. For example, Times New Roman is improperly spaced, while Helvetica is not.

When will the bug be fixed?
We don't know, but we've reported the problem to Apple and hope they'll take action to resolve it. If you have a developer account with Apple, you may also report the problem to them to increase the likelihood that they'll soon address this issue. Please reference our bug report #22953076.
