Turn off highlighting of bullets/numbers in lists?

In both Page View and Draft View, the bullets or sequence numbers for a list are rendered against a grey background that isn't present on printed output. I'd *really* like to get rid of this, and have the background be just the "paper colour." But I can't find a way to do it. Can someone tell me how to do this? Have I missed something obvious
