With 2.7, when I type 'i' on its own and click the space bar it disappers completely. I wasn't aware of this problem before in previous versions.

I don't experience this problem. My first thoughts are that you might have a font problem or that there might be a QuickFix setting that needs to be fixed. Does this happen no matter what font you are using?
