I can't get Bookends to copy citations into footnotes. I checked all settings etc., downloaded the latest version of Bookends. Still doesn't work.

Have you specifed NWE as the word processor in BE prefs? If you do copy formatted (top right of the ref window) and then do a paste at the insertion point in NWE it will paste the ref in {}.
I've just tried this with Word 2004 and it does the paste automatically so I'm guessing that something is adrift with NWE b7.
It would be helpful if others could try this but I think we have a bug.

I've just tried this myself with the following results:
1. If a document is already opened in Nisus Writer Express, invoking the menu Edit > Copy Selected Citations from Bookends works just fine. Eg: you are switched into Express and the citations are pasted.
2. If no document is open in Express, the copy citations menu switches you into Express but does nothing.
Is this the behavior you are seeing? If so, it looks like a new document is not being created for some reason.

What I'm seeing is that holding the Command key down interferes with the Paste.
1. Open a NWE document
2. Set Bookends to use NWE as the default wp
3. Select a reference in Bookends
4. Select Edit -> Copy Selected Citations -> switch and paste works
5. Use Command-Y shortcut -> switch no paste
6. Hold down Command key, then select Edit -> Copy Selected Citations -> switch, no paste
So the holding down the Command key seems to be interfering.
All Bookends is doing is sending this macro:
on run
tell application "Nisus Writer Express v27b7"
Do Menu Macro with macro "Edit:Paste:Paste"
end tell
end run

Thanks Jon, you've found it exactly. I'll get this fixed in time for our next beta, cheers.

Beta 8 should take care of this problem.

Just tried it with Beta 8 and it still doesn't work for me. Are we talking about the same thing? When I copy citation using the blue button next to 'attach' in the BEnds ref window, nothing happens. Do the same with Word 2004 and BE hands over and pastes in the citation using {...}
I have selected Beta8 in BE prefs as the the WP.
Copying formatted (cmnd-K) from BE and then paste in NWE works fine and is my normal method for citing in footnotes which is probably why I haven't picked this up before.
I'm using 10.4.6 and BE 904

beta 8 works much better. I can copy citations from the Bookends menu clicking on "copy citations formatted" and it automatically inserts the reference into the document. However, Bookends tends to crash quite a bit now.

I doubt this has anything to do with NWE. Please contact us directly for technical support (quick tip, make sure you are using the latest version of Bookends, then perform a Verify on your database).

Actually Jon and Martin it has everything to do with me

I failed to notice that NWE was not linked to BE, even though NWE was open. Presumably it is done automatically in Word. Everything now works fine thanks.
I could post this to the BE list as it's not an NWE question, but in the 'linking window" in the ref window in Bookends I have listed as possibilities for linking, Little Snitch, Stuffit Daemon, Wacom Tablet driver plus a variety of other non WP apps as well as NWE. Why are these listed, and is there a way to remove them from the list to leave only those I need - say NWE and Word 2004. Unfortunately I have to use the latter from time to time.
cheers,
Tacitus
