Can't open old Nisus files

Hi.
2001 I wrote a novel in NWP, got no interest and then lost the files. Recently I found the files and wanted to revisit the project. Back in 2001 Mac did not require filename extensions and I didn’t use them, so the files show as exec, but show NWP as creator. They opened in Nisus as gibberish code. I tried adding .rtf and .txt and even .doc but they all open as gibberish code. Same for .doc and .docx. I even tried placing them in InDesign and Affinity, no go. Then in another forum I tracked a comment about text extraction and a contributor converted the main file into .rtf and .pdf for me. He told me he downloaded a trial copy of NWP and opened the file from within the program. Great, I wanted also to open 10 or so associated files (characters, plot etc). However, opening the files within my licensed NWP 3.4.1 still doesn’t work. Illogical or no, I downloaded a trial copy of NWP as he had done and still no go. Any ideas?
