Is there any way to have the date stamp update, so it always shows the date of the last time the document was worked on? It's handy in a printout. I can always use the macro to paste the current date in, but I would like updating the date to be automatic.

Not -- to my knowledge -- at this point. You aren't the first one who has asked for that, so I suspect they have it somewhere on "the list" for a future version, but I don't have any inside knowledge as to when it might make its appearance.

We are working on an "update" to the date stamp "feature" of Nisus Writer Express. Exactly how it will be implemented, we have not yet decided.
