I have some questions regarding inherency of attributes in styles, and also about the generation a table of contents.

Styles--

I have three heading styles in use, Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3. Headings 1 and 2 use bolded text. Heading 3, based on Heading 2, also has bolded text. I would *like* that Heading 3 does NOT use bolded text. However, NWE will not allow me to unbold the text in the style definition area. Is bold inherency something non-modifiable?

Tables of contents--

Is it possible to create a table of contents, generated from the lines marked with, say, Headings 1, 2, and 3?

Unbolding a Style

You should be able to unbold a style. All I need to do is select that style in the Style Sheet, then do any of the following.

* Click the bold button under Options in the NWE Character palette

* Click Bold in the Format menu

* Press command-B

When I do this in a style that has inherited a bold attribute, an "Unbold" code appears in the style definition. Does this not work for you? If not, could it have something to do with the font you are using? Some fonts are "bold" by nature (e.g., Arial Black, Gill Sans Ultra Bold).

Table of Contents

I have done what you want to do. If you don't require multiple levels of headings and don't mind omitting or manually adding (static) page numbers, it's fairly simple.

1. Click in a header of the style you want in the table of contents.

2. Click the paragraph style tag in the status bar.

3. Choose Select All from the menu that appears.

4. Copy (Edit > Copy > Copy or command-C).

5. Place the insertion point where you want to insert the table of contents.

6. Paste (Edit > Paste > Paste or command-V) or paste as plain text (Edit > Paste > Paste Text Only).

7. Format as you like.
