Lost curly quotes, other punctuation

I opened a Tex-Edit Plus file in NWE. I discovered that I had lost all the curcly quotes, em-dashes, and other such punctuation.

Bummer.

How do I prevent this from happening?

Preferences->QuickFix->"Use Smart Punctuation" checkbox.
