I love 2.6 more every day. But here's something I want to know: Is there any way to turn off those infernal little red lines that come up under words the speller doesn't (yet) recognize? I want to keep "Check Spelling as You Type" on, but those annoying underlines drive me around the bend! (And remind me of Word -- eek.)
Here's hoping!
Thanks!

Re: Spelling issues
I'm not sure I quite understand what you want. The red underlines ARE checking spelling as you type, which you say you both want to get rid of and want to keep.mouthyorange wrote:I love 2.6 more every day. Spelling Issues
All right. The way I had it set up before, in 2.5, was the way I wanted it. Can't remember what I did there, and don't have time to dig around finding out. So this is what I want to have again in 2.6:
I actually want it only to CORRECT spelling as I type, according, of course, to my previous spellchecks, not to "check" it.
I have tried turning "Check spelling As You Type" off, yet every document I open up comes up with it on. I want to turn it OFF, now, as default.
In Preferences/Quick Fix there's nothing there that shows how to turn Check As You Type OFF as default.
Finally, I've twice gone into Preferences/New Document/Edit New Document, and deselected "Check As You Type" under Edit/Spelling, saved Nisus New File.dot, closed the window, quit the programme, re-booted and opened a New document. Check as You Type was "on", again! I went back into Prefs/New Document/Edit New Document, and the version of Nisus New File.dot that came up there had it turned OFF, as I'd left it last time! But it still comes up ON when I actually use File/New.
In summary: What does one have to do to get "Check As You Type" turned OFF as default both for opening existing documents (in which I'd manually turned it off the last time they were open, by the way, and saved them that way) and in New Documents?
Thanks for any help you can give.

To disable "live" spell checking for all new documents simply uncheck the box Preferences->New Document->View->Options: "Check Spelling as You Type". This setting is sticky and once set all new docs created in NWX should have it set off.
For previously created documents you have to set it off for each document individually. Open the document desired then go to Edit->Spelling->"Check Spelling as You Type" and ensure it is NOT checked. Again this setting is sticky (per document) and should not need to be set more than once.
All this is very easily discovered by opening NWX and going to Help->Nisus Writer Express Help->How to Check Spelling.
The auto-correction of common typing errors is of course controlled by the settings in Preferences->Quick Fix->Fix Typos section and is, strictly speaking, quite separate from spell checking.

Thanks, dshan. Your response was clear and helpful. Not sure why I didn't do that before -- or whether I tried it -- but I've done what you suggested now, and hopefully it shall work.

Spelling Issues
Midwinter, I'm still having difficulties getting the spell-check prefs to stick. Had a really frustrating go-round with it yesterday, in 2.6! Kept trying to get new docs to open in Canadian English and to spell-check in Canadian English. And I'd set one thing and open a new doc and start working and too late discover that the thing had slipped into U.S. English again. I can only hope I've finally fixed it now! I tried setting it from everywhere, including from the languages setting on the bar at the bottom of the document window. THAT one seemed to work ... we'll see.
Thanks for commenting again. You were very direct, at first, which really shoud be just fine, but I wasn't sure whether you were really asking for clarification, or whether some geek (I don't know you, after all!) was just trying to make me look silly. But then, I'm one of the sensitive ones -- and that's just fine, too! In any case, everything's cool. Let's hope the spell-checker turns out to be cool, as well ...

I may be wrong, but I remember reading something about how that language setting needs to be set in the international OS prefs:mouthyorange wrote:Midwinter, I'm still having difficulties getting the spell-check prefs to stick. Apple menu>system prefs>international
Choose your language there and see if it changes anything.
