Update: I still get InDesign crashes with new documents I create in NW, either as .rtf or .doc. I dumped the preference files in both programs after the crashing, but that didn't change things. :(

I tried to find the preferences for Nisus Writer: mycomputer/library/preferences/nisus.

There is no Nisus file there. Where would it be?

Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger)

Thanks.

Check the Library/Preferences folder inside your user folder.

In my computer the file is located like this: /Users/mycomputer/Library/Preferences/com.nisus.NisusWriter.plist

RTF files crash InDesign

Have you tried using an RTF file output from some other WP (e.g. Word, AbiWord, etc.) in InDesign? If that fails I'd start talking to Adobe...

Yes, I created a Word RTF file and it place fine.

One strange thing: When I tried to place a short NW Express RTF file into another program, Canvas, I got a document full of garble!

Maybe it's time to dump NW Express and reinstall?

Here's the latest: I created 4 one-line document and saved them in the following formats:

rtf, doc, html, text.

The Html and text documents placed OK in InDesign. The RTF and Doc files crashed InDesign.

There was no special formatting in any of the files.

i know you are trying to help, but if you look back on the first page you'll see that it is *only* nwe rtf files that cause inDesign to crash.

This long standing issue has been keeping me off of nwe for a while now.

Hi, JonLink!

That was then, this is now. NW is crashing InDesign with doc files it creates from scratch also. At first it was only a few rtf files, then all rtf's I created, then the doc files I created.

I'm not a techie, but I know some users have this problem, some don't. My concern is that 1. it slows my workflow if I have to create in NWX, then open it in Word, etc.

I've used some form of Nisus Writer for 15 years or so. And I like the look and feel of the OSX version...but if it doesn't work right.

We've investigated this problem and we've found the cause as well as a workaround. This issue should be fixed in our next free upgrade. In the meantime, if there is interest, I can put together a perl script that can fix your existing files so InDesign does not crash when opening them.

The Details:
Apparently InDesign does not like to see controls that describe section breaks before the first actual section break (eg: "sbk*" controls should not appear before the first "sect" control). Our fix is to omit these break controls from our RTF files.

Our RTF files are perfectly legal and InDesign should (obviously) not crash when reading them. Indeed, it is the only application to have trouble with this quirk in our RTF files. That said, our RTF files did contain a superfluous control that future versions of Express will omit.
