Multilingual spelling?

Post by niklas »

I sometimes write documents that include several languages, and to get spelling to work I have to keep changing the language of the spell checker, which can get a bit cumbersome.

Now, in other cocoa apps that use the system spell checker there is a great option to set the language to "Multilingual", but this option does not show up in NWE. Using this option has the drawback that a word that is misspelled in one language can be a correct word in another language, but for me this is a relatively minor problem and I would love to see this option in NWE as well.

Best regards, Niklas

Hi:

Nisus Writer Express actually supports an even more powerful solution for writing in multiple languages. Try this:

1. Select the text in your document written in one language.

2. Choose the language its is written in from the flag at the bottom right on your window. If the language you are using is not shown, choose Edit Languages... to open the language preference pane. Then click on the More... button to find your language.

3. Repeat with each portion of your text written in a different language.

When you are writing new documents, apply the languages as you go. Nisus Writer Express will automatically switch spelling dictionaries as well as a number of other things such as QuickFix settings, smart quotes, thesaurus (right now only English is supported, but it will be turned off for the others), secondary fonts, and so on.

We do use the standard Cocoa dictionaries by the way. We just allow you to actually assign languages in NWE, which is why the interface is a little bit different.

Cheers,

Thanks for your prompt response! I do appreciate the power of switching languages, it is just that sometimes it gets a bit tiresome to click on the flag all the time...

I guess I am just lazy. A multilingual option would give me a "quick and dirty" way of getting a spell check without all the extra stuff I get with a full language switch.

If you don't mind the drawbacks you can still use the Multilingual dictionary from within Express. Just set the dictionary for all the languages you use to "Multilingual". You can do this by:

1. Choose "Preferences..." from the Nisus Writer Express application menu.
2. Switch to the "Languages" tab.
3. For each language you'd like to have use the Multilingual dictionary, select it from the list on the left. Then change "Spelling" on the right side to "Multilingual".

Oh, that was cool! I can now easily switch back and forth between "dirty" and "pure" spell checking too, depending on my current writing. Best of both worlds...

Many thanks!
