Can We Restore Old Title Bar?

Post by Barry »

I'm using NWP 3.2.2 on MacOS Monterey and I find the change in the title bar to be a bit of a problem. It is no longer at the top of the document page, being collapsed in the upper left corner of the document. I often have multiple files open, stacking documents for quick reference. Unless I go full screen (which defeats the purpose of stacking) then I have to hoover over the collapsed title to see the full name of the document. Also, by putting the document title beside the toolbar, some of my icons are pressed off screen so I have to once again hoover over another menu to see them.

Is there a setting or any other way for me to restore the old title bar at the top of the document? If not, could you provide us this option?
It would help if the full title was visible. Thanks for your consideration. :)

Nisus Writer does indeed adopt Apple's new unified toolbar, which places a document's file status (e.g. file name) alongside the left of the toolbar items, instead of in its own separate titlebar. I think whether or not a person likes this new layout depends largely on the width of their monitor. If your document windows are normally wide enough to fit everything then this layout saves valuable vertical space.

But I also understand why some people don't like the new layout. Even if space isn't a problem, it's a drawback that long file names aren't always visible. You have to mouseover to see the full name. It's also irritating that windows are harder to drag around screen because there's no distinct titlebar that's easy to grab.

We'll certainly consider adding an option to restore the prior toolbar layout. Thanks for your feedback on this Barry!

I'm curious to know which document frame is preferred by our users. Please vote in our poll.

Good idea. I voted for the old title bar. I see that when I voted I was in the majority of about 83%. I always wonder if I could possibly be right if I'm in the majority, though … :)

I would note that the "edited" notation was far more prominent in the old title bar format. Sometimes it was nice to quickly see if the document was edited by a quick glance. Now, it's still there but quite small.

I liked the discoverability of the older title bar better.

It looks like votes for the old document title/frame settled in around 60%, which is still a big majority over the new frame around 30%.

Nisus Writer should probably revert to the old frame by default and make the new frame optional. We'll have to investigate this as a future potential enhancement.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback!
