Nisus does not work with iPad and Splashtop Streamer

Post by talaivan »

The Splashtop App is on sale for iPad -- it works very well with most programs (even Word -- Apple's programs also work), but when you type return on the iPad, it does not register in a Nisus (2.01) document on the Mac. Note return does work with Word, Mail, etc. I wonder why -- since Nisus uses Cocoa and it works in Cocoa programs like Pages.

I'm not familiar with Splashtop, but that is an odd result. Does other text entry work correctly? In other words, is it just inserting newlines/returns that fails when working with Nisus Writer?

All the characters seem to work except return, which does not register. When I input from the keyboard attached to the Mac, return still works -- but not from the iPad. When you hit return on the iPad, the place where you're trying to insert it turns blue for a tenth of a second or so and then that goes away. It might be worth getting hold of Splashtop and testing it out, as the program now costs only a couple of dollars and the issue it has may indicate some problem that would appear elsewhere.

Does it work in TextEdit? That, NWP and many other apps are based round Apple's text engine; Pages is not, its a private text engine that they're not releasing to developers, and Word, OpenOffice and clones use their own text engines. Other than TextEdit, you might try Yojimbo, or Evernote or Together, as I think they all use the basic Apple text engine.

When you say it turns blue, would you describe it as a sort of "flash" that encompasses the whole line? Something that looks like this:

flash.png (17.41 KiB) Viewed 6088 times
If so, that's the "flash selection" command, which can be triggering in NWP directly using the menu Edit > Select > Flash Selection, or by pressing the Enter key (as opposed to the Return key). It sounds like Splashtop is confusing those two keys.

Mark is correct that when comparing NWP to other text applications it's best to use TextEdit, because we share the same underlying text engine (Apple's "Cocoa" text system). Though in this case TextEdit has no such flash, because it's something we added to NWP. In TextEdit the Enter key does exactly the same as the Return key: it adds a newline.
