Nonstandard Page Numbering

My publisher requires that each book chapter be in a separate document file. But they want continuous page numbers -- that is, if Chapter One ends at page 11, then the page numbers for the separate file containing Chapter Two must begin as page #12. Let me emphasize: this not a separate Section, it has to be completely different file. I tried some workarounds using the Section menu, but all that did was create an empty page. Lord knows how that would look when the publisher opens the file in Microsoft Word. Seems like this should be a simple matter, but I'm not finding an answer in the User's Manual.

Seems like if you go to the section palette in chapter 2, and make sure the "page numbering" submenu is expanded, you'll see a "Restart At" command that is greyed out. However, the text box next to it is active. Enter whatever page number you want to start chapter two at, 12 it appears. That should start your page number at 12. Make sure stuff like "Different First Page" is not checked in the "Header/Footer" palette that is likely on the same palette group.

That worked for me, at least.

Yeah. That greyed out "Restart At" box is probably confusing. That box becomes active if you have multiple sections, since once you have a second section you can re-start the numbering. But it would be nice if Nisus could have the label display "Start at" in the first section, instead of the greyed out "restart".

That's a very good idea, thanks Philip! I'll file it as a potential improvement.

I found the Section palette totally confusing under these circumstances. Thank goodness "Vanceone" had the intuition to just go ahead and change the "Restart" (NOT) number anyway. It works, but -- IMO -- that's a bug and needs to be fixed. Also, there's nothing in the User's Manual to even hint that it would work this way.

Personally, I think the option to start numbering at something other than "1" should be part of the Insert "Automatic Number" dropdown.

The "Restart on" trick works sometimes, sometimes not, so far. I got one to change ... when I made another edit. But that's not working on the next chapter. All these files started from the same template, so I have no idea what worked in the one that's not working in this one. I'll keep at it, but this is VERY frustrating.

Edit: Tried the "update stale content" command. That did not work either. Now down to desperate measures, since I'm working on deadline.

Edit #2: Continued to get inconsistent results, but mostly finding that changing the "Restart At" number did NOT work for most. Kinda weird ... what I had to do as a workaround. First, I Quit Writer Pro -- on the "educated guess" that there were "resets" going on that I couldn't see. I then re-opened it from the app, rather than double-clicking on a file name. After some experimentation, I then opened a one-page file that had no page numbers and the default "1" in that box. I am now retrieving the files using the "Open" menu command (again, not using double-click). They are coming up with the "1" in the Restart At box, and the change "takes" when I enter a new value there. Very strange, but I'll take it.
