Get Info- Open With... Damages File?

I'm seeing this regularly using a Mac (don't know if there is a pc version of NWP), I can select an RTF document and say open with: NWP and it opens without issue in NWP. However if I open the Get Info Window and select NWP as the default application and then double click the document to open it, NWP launches and tells me that this is a damaged file and to place it in the trash.

Why?
Is this a known bug?
Thanks!

I get something similar with Get Info:
The file "filename.rtf" could not be opened.
There were problems that prevented us from opening the document.
Send the file to Nisus Software for analysis.
However, if I duplicate the same file in the Finder (Command-D), the copy of the file opens without a problem.

It would be nice if the Developer would chime in. This is contrary to how assigning an application to a document should work in the MacOS.

Developer, anyone home?

To me, this is an Apple Bug in the last two OS releases. For me, using "Get info" I can assign a single file to be opened by a specific application; if I click to make that the default app for all files with that extension, they become unreadable. I have this with .mp4s, which MacOS insists should open in Amadeus Pro, even though they are video files that should open in QuickTime … and it includes .mp4s rendered from Final Cut Pro!

So Martin or someone from Nisus may chip in, but I suspect it's not something they can do much about.

Hi yes

'Get Info' offers 'Nisus Writer Pro' for default opening MPEG-4 Movies with ending .mp4 –
I never tried to. Maybe that's why I never got a damaged file alert…
This is Tim's fault – since long!

Interesting... thanks for the info.
Since Text Edit and NWP seem to compete to open the same files, this is why I don't make a universal selection as I have both Text Edit and NWP files on my computer. So I have been selecting an individual file and in the "get info" window, have been assigning NWP to it. but then if I double click it, and expect it to open with the correct program (NWP), it comes back as damaged and advised me to trash it. :(

I've not experimented with other applications, nor have tried a universal change as you mentioned. I'll check the Apple forums to see if this bug is being talked about.

As luck would have it I recently had to do a universal switch of default apps like this (macOS 10.12.4) and I've had no issues with opening the files afterwards. They all seem to open just fine in the newly anointed app for that filetype. Only odd thing I noticed was that 5-10% of the files icons didn't change to the new app icon, they retain the old app icon. But they sill open in the new app if I double-click on them and Get Info shows it's set correctly as the app for that file.

Now this wasn't rtf files, it was epub (and Nisus wasn't involved) but from what's been said this is supposed to be a general bug in macOS applicable to any filetype?

I just tried assigning NWP to a document and when I double clicked it, it opened in NWP, but NWP was already open and it did keep it's Text Ecit icon. More experimentation is in order. Thanks for the report! I'll report back.
