Automatic capter titels in header

Hey guys,

I'm quite new to Nisus Writer Pro and was looking around for a solution to the following problem:

I want to add a header to my document which automatically shows the current capter / heading on the page. So if for example "text 1" is my heading on page 2 I want "text 1" to be the header. This should work throughout the whole document and more or less update itself.

I know how that would work in word but I could not figure out how to do it in Nisus. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Welcome to Nisus Writer Pro (and our forums), we hope you're enjoying the application thus far!

What you'd like to do, where the relevant chapter title (heading) is automatically shown in the document header or footer area, is sometimes called a "running head". Unfortunately Nisus Writer does not have this feature, sorry. However, it's been requested before and we have it filed as an enhancement request– I'll be sure to add your vote there. Thank you!

Hello, d3m00.

Here is a workaround.

First apply a table-of-content level to your headings.
Put the insertion point where you want the chapter title to appear in the header.
Select Insert>Cross-Reference…
From the Insert Reference to drop-down select in TOC: Default TOC. The headings will appear listed below.
Select the running heading from the list.
Select Display Text: Marked Text.
Click Insert.

I hope that helps. Any trouble let me know.

Best, Henry.

Hello Henry. Just a clarification question.
Your method still requires one to insert a section break (with different headers) for each chapter, doesn't it?

Yes, of course. A heading for a section. I suppose you are saying you have multiple chapters per section, haven’t you?

Henry.

That was fast! Thank you so much for your help! I will try to use your workaround Henry or just do the header manually after I finish writing the whole paper.
