Problem with scanning Bookends citations

Post by iljajj »

Hi all,

I recently (as in: last week) switched from Mellel to Nisus Writer Pro. The whole thing has gone pretty smoothly, save for one thing. When I start to scan my citations (via Bookends) my 'processing in Bookends' progress bar halts at about one third and then does nothing. It has been sitting pretty for just over half an hour now, and the number of citations is not really that huge. Bookends is open and appears to be doing fine.

Is there anything I'm missing here, or a setting I've stupidly overlooked? One of my main reasons for choosing NWP was that its Bookends integration was said to be at about the same level as Mellel's, and I'd hate to find out otherwise.

Do you, by any chance, still have Mellel set in the Bookends preferences as the word-processor. I don't know that that would cause your problem, but it crossed my mind. I have Scrivener set, but it doesn't cause problems when I scan the exported RTFs in NWP, but you never know if Mellel might be causing the hitch.

Mark's suggestion is a good one. You might also make sure you're using the latest versions of NWP (1.4) and Bookends (10.6.3). You might also try the scanning menus from within NWP directly, eg: Insert > Bibliography > Scan Document.

Thanks for the tips sofar.

At least Nisus now connects to Bookends (after I updated Bookends), but although they seem to go through all the right moves (processing in bookends, being asked which format I'd like the bibliography in, Bookends ostensibly scanning the document, etc.) I still don't get a bibliography at the bibliography placeholder's location, and no formatted citations in footnotes. I tried manually unscanning and re-scanning, and at one point Nisus even crashed, but no results.

Anyone?

Things seem to be steadily deteriorating. Nisus now crashes on ANY attempt to save a document that contain citations:

Would you be able to send us your materials so we can try to replicate the problem? We'd want both the file you're scanning and the Bookends database. Perhaps it would be easiest for you to zip and email them to me directly at:

Thanks for your help- hopefully we can get this working for you.

After some contact with the Nisus support people, the problem got solved - and many, many thanks for that!

The main issue turned out to be a problem with a 600MB+ file (due to the strange way in which RTF handles images). The Bookends issue required a re-install, but now works fine. No clue what caused it, though.

Hi
Can I ask how you solved the problem? I have a similar issue with Bookends. When trying to resolve ambiguous citations, after the regular citations in the document it comes up with several character strings and numbers which don't appear in the document. I'm not sure where they are embedded in the document and how to get rid of them/how to stop Bookends from thinking that they are citations.
Thanks
