Reference manager integration

I've been playing around with Zotero lately (a cool Firefox add-on that does citation management and much more. Their motto: "A personal research assistant. Inside your browser.") and I'm very impressed. It's simple and elegant, like Nisus. They have plugins for Word and NeoOffice/Open Office that allow for cite-while-you-write functionality.

I wonder if, say, the Nisus team or others, might consider writing such a plugin for Nisus. I have no idea what would be involved, but it would be a great solution to Nisus's lack of ref manager integration.

Somehow requests about citation software integration tend to go unanswered here. Others have asked for integration of other citation managers, without reply. I have asked for Sente integration and guess what, no answer. Guessing from the devs silence, citation management software integration does currently not seem to be of particularly high priority. Still, it would be an interesting edge over MS Word, which seems to have lost its direct integration with citation managers due to the absence of VBA in Word 2008. So, come on Nisus! Go for it!

I don't think NWP has a Plug-in architecture like Word and NeoOffice. This is a good thing. Endnote is not compatible with the new version of Word because Microsoft decided to get rid of VBA, the mechanism that most of these things are based on.

ALL reference managers are compatible with NW because all reference managers can find citations in an RTF file, which just so happens to be NWP/NWE's default format. And because RTF is NW's default format, when you convert your references, your document is maintained perfectly.

For more info, see this post, where I discuss my workflow for Endnote and NWP. This would work with NWE as well. By the way, the newest version of Endnote cannot work with the newest version of Word, but the newest version of Endnote through the oldest version of Endnote will always work with NWP.

Also, once again. Endnote has an Applescript library. Although I have asked before, does anyone know enough about Applescript to perhaps write a few of them that could automate the Endnote workflow?

Well, I was indeed aware of Sente's ability to scan RTFs, in fact, I am using it. However, if you have a look at the level of Sente (and Bookends) integration in Mellel, that's a completely different story and does make life easier. This is real integration, whereas another software app's (in this case Sente) ability to scan the file format that happens to be the default format of Nisus can't really be called integration, can it?
