direction of writing

Post by Yohanan »

Hi, The topic is probably dealt with somewhere in the threads of the site, but I could not find this. I am trying to use a different Hebrew font (Yehudit) but whatever direction I select in NWP it always goes in a reverse (abnormal) order. Has anyone a clue about this ? It seems I have to change from my old Hebrew and Greek fonts to a Unicode one.

The only time I can remember something like this happening, Yohanan, was in the early days of Hebrew fonts when they weren’t automatically set to go right to left and had to be entered in reverse order. Drogulin comes to mind as one example. So maybe that’s the issue with Yehudit?

As Daniel suspected, Yehudit is indeed a font from those bad early days. It is not Unicode aware. Yehudit may display as Hebrew on screen, but the underlying characters are not Hebrew. Your text is actually gibberish like "yrIv]a;B]" which is why it doesn't obey modern standards or directionality.

Please switch to using Unicode aware fonts as soon as you can.
