Re: Gylphs and paragraph styles in InDesign CS4

I'm not familiar with Minion Pro but it seems that the glyph you're trying to insert isn't part of Minion Pro. If your paragraph style requires Minion Pro as designated font, the glyph will be taken and displayed from a replacement font - which in turn triggers the plus sign.

Re: Footnote: question re. divider line

Mike,

Thank you very much for the advice! Changing the alignment of the divider from bottom to top did it.
Have a nice day!

Footnote: question re. divider line

I'd like to insert a gap between the divider line and und footnote text. I mean - I can separate the divider line from the main text by adjusting the gutter. But I'd like to see the footnote text a few millimeters below the divider line. I've searched the user manual but I don't seem to be using the...

Re: Soft hyphenation now uses en-dash?

withoutFeathers - there has indeed been a change in the handling of the hyphen and it occurred around NWP 2.1.4 (I think). It somehow doesn't sit too well with Apple's hyphenation engine. (I hope I remember that right.) One solution to the problem would be to set the "Hyphenation" ("V...

Martin -

Thank you very much for your help so far.
So it's down to wait and hope.
Would it help if I sent you the same sample again, this time using NWP 2.1.1 (and OS 10.11)? In this combination it works for me (with hyphenation control set to "Disabled", that is.)

Re: Hyphenation macro doesn't work any more in NWP 2.1.2

Offhand it seems like the issue is related to the combination of hyphenation and a justified paragraph alignment. Well, that surely seems strange. I wonder how it is possible that using justified paragraphs and hyphenation (hyphenation control set to "Disabled") has been working up to and...

Thanks again for your reply.
I've tried what you suggested but to no avail. So I've sent a sample via the Help -> Send Feedback menu along with a print-to-PDF file for you to see what happens on my machine.

Re: Page break before as a style

It sounds like you are working around the behavior where NWP always ignores a paragraph's "before" spacing if it is the first line on a page. That's correct. Ah, so you keep all your chapters in separate documents. I had assumed that all your chapters were in the same file. Sorry to have ...

Hyphenation macro doesn't work any more in NWP 2.1.2

It seems that the "Insert hyphen (soft)" macro which I've been using for many years now in order to achieve decent (German) hyphenation doesn't work anymore with NWP 2.1.2. I'm running OS 10.11 "El Capitan" on my machine and the "Hyphenation" submenu is set to "Dis...

Wonderful that such a topic can provide such euphoria :) Well, it beats blasting your brains with alcohol or hallucinogenics by a wide margin (And by "blasting your brains" I don't mean enjoying a glass of beer or wine now and then! :P). martin, It sounds like you want the chapter's parag...

Re: Page break before as a style

Fantasizing a little bit more about this topic. If there would be such a feature someday, it would be great if there could be some other feature attached to it. Let's say I have a manuscript with several chapters. I don't want to create or "Save As" a new document for every new chapter but...

Re: Hyphenation Exceptions?

Well, I write in German, too, and I've been using NWP for many years now. I've written a 1000+ pages novel using NWP, and while it is indeed time-consuming to go through many pages inserting hyphens manually, it's definitely worth it. But that's just me.

Re: Hyphenation Exceptions?

Uli, In fact, there is a way to achieve what you want to do. 1. Install the 2 macros "Insert Hyphen (Non-breaking)" and/or "Insert Hyphen (soft)" from the macro repository. 2. Set "Hyphenation" in the "View" menu to "Disabled" or "Manual" r...
