Performance Update 4

Typing speed is now even better. We eliminated a few extra time wasters to keep it responsive even in very large documents. Also, we are changing how we do some thing in the background so they will not interfere with your typing. In general I can anywhere type inside a 300+ page document and Express keeps up with me. It actually does an OK job of this in general in 2.0, but we are smoothing out some rough spots that gave some people trouble sometimes.

One other change we are going to make for our Draft View-using friends: we will no long layout the page view of the document until you actually switch to it in Express. What this means is that if you open a file in Draft View, it will open much faster, but you might have to wait for a few seconds the first time to switch to Page View mode so we can do the initial typesetting. We will put up a progress indicator, of course, so you know what is happening.

Does the planned change in draft-view mean that no formatting to the text will be visible in draft-view? (I prefer to see styles like headers and so on also in draft-view). If, on the other hand, the mentioned change relates to when the text is laid out on the pages, then I’m happy with the change.

Another thing about draft-view, though: Would it be possible to view footnotes in draft-view. It is a bit annoying, for academic writing to have to go to a layout-like view for entering a note or two. (I love the clean interface I can get with draft-view, no toolbar, drawer hidden.)

There will be no visible change to draft view. In 1.x up to 2.0.1, when you open a document in draft view, we keep both draft and page view drawn, even if you never switch to page view.

Why not use tooltips in Draft View? That way hovering the cursor over the footnote marker would bring up the footnote text without having to go backwards and forwards between the two views.

Reply to Seth: Good. Than my fear of a changed draft view was unwarranted. Looking forward to the new update…

Reply to Tacitus: Tooltips for footnotes would be nice. It would, however, not solve the problem of being sent to go to page view when entering a footnote. I would like to be able to enter footnotes without leaving my super-clean writing environment in draft view.

Reply to ceffe: True, tooltips for footnotes would not solve that problem, but if we extend the idea a little, why not, when in Draft View, have a pop-up window in which to insert the footnote text? Formating would take place in the background.

The reason I like draft view is that you can apply a non-printing background tint which is easier on the eyes if you are working for a long time.

    cheers,

To Tacitus: Yep, you’re right. That would definitely be nice solution (tooltips and pop-up) for viewing and entering footnotes in draft view. BTW thanks for the background tint tip. I had not noticed that one.

  7. It is this Draft View that I find most usefull for a theatrical production, I can scroll through the entire play as one long document. .. This same Draft View is also where the graphic layer connected to exact spots in the text, where I can write my cues and warnings, is most effective for me.
