Recently Ori Redler, who makes a competing product compared his product to ours for speed. One of his tests was:
B. Scrolling speed: I’ve tested this by pressing the Page Down button for a minute to see to what page I get and how many key presses are remembered. NWE: got to page 27, remembered to page 53 (took one more minute). Mellel: End of document (after 45 seconds).
Thanks to some hard work by Martin scrolling is now silky smooth. I just tried this test on a 122 page document. NWE took 12 seconds to reach the end, Mellel took 12 seconds also. I think we may be able to speed this up a little more, but I’m pretty happy with our improvement!
That’s good news!
Charles, that’s great news. Hopefully some of the improvements apply down to G3s for fairly recent iBooks at least. : )
It’s been great to see you responding to the users, and jumping on performance… and letting us know about it!
I’ve seen that test this morning.
A big point for you is that you support Word 2000 (that I use at work).
But what about index, it’s a pity that you don’t have this fonctionnality ?
I have to choose between you product and others to write my thesis… A document that will have about 200-250 and 20 pages of graphics.
What could you say to convince me that i’d better buy your product ?
Johnathan – I’d suggest you used the trial version.
Jonathan: Nisus Writer Express has been designed with the writer in the mind. With NWE you get many of the powerful features of Word, such as per-document styles and sophisticated tables. You also get great exclusive writing tools you cannot find in Word such as a live word and paragraph count and a language palette that automatically suggests options from our thesaurus whenever you stop on a word, not to mention our powerful Find and Replace.
Most importantly, Nisus Writer Express’s native file format is RTF, which means that you can create your document in NWE knowing that you will be able to share it with others and will not be locked into using just one program. You can find some of these features in other word processors, but no one else gives you the combination of writing tools and compatibility with Word.
That said, Nisus Writer Express has not currently been as optimized for long documents as you would probably want. As you can see from the blog, we are working on addressing that right now. Also, we do not support floating graphics; only graphics that are included within the flow of text.
As Tom said, you should definitely give NWE a try in the trial version. When you do, let us know what you like and dislike. Thanks to commenting!
Well, it’s good to have a little competition to compare yourselves with. Of course, the speed improvement is good news. Nisus Writer Express 2 is almost to the point where I can start recommending it as an alternative to Word. It will be great to see the improvements in the next release!
Hi Charles,
Well, now that the scrolling problem is done and over with, I guess we’ll both have to attend to that pesky typing speed problem (in page view!)… :-)
Thanks for your great comments. It’s definitly a great experience when you could communicate with the creator of the product that you use !
