Nisus Writer FAQs
Opening and Saving Documents
Question:
Where are all the file format capabilities I used to have?
Answer:
If you have an old Nisus Writer 4.x or 5.0.x or 5.1 (up to 5.1.2) CD you can do a custom installation of the File Type Translators.
Question:
Why won't Nisus Writer read my Microsoft Word 98 files?
Answer:
The best way to get documents to and from Nisus Writer and other word processors
(Claris Works, MS Word, WordPerfect) is by using the third-party tool MacLink Plus 11.x
from DataViz.

We wish we had the ability to do this directly within Nisus Writer. However, we cannot
use the time and effor needed to "chase" the changing file formats of the various word
processors when someone else in the industry makes it their corporate reason for
existence. We (on the other hand) have maintained essentially the same file format for
the past 5 versions of Nisus Writer.
A
long story explains the reason for this.
Question:
Now, how do I reload the filters?
Answer:
- Disable the current Claris folder by typing the word (disabled) after the
word Claris.
- Create a new folder in the System folder entitled Claris.
- Insert the Nisus Writer CD (or your first Nisus Writer disk into the
disk drive) and choose Custom Install.
- Install the File Type Translators.
- Restart your computer.
- Throw away the XTND Translator List from the Preferences folder.
Once you have emptied the trash, you can launch
Nisus Writer. You should
now see the Word 5 and 6 translators in the lower right portion of the Open
dialog. If you have filters you need in the other
Claris folder, you can switch
folders by interchanging the "disabled" status. You can also copy
the filters from the old one into the new one making sure not to duplicate
anything.
Question:
Opening Word Files containing Equations with Nisus Writer.
Answer:
When translating Word files with Equations,
it has been noticed that
Word 4, 5 and 5.1 equations after being translated into Nisus Writer will
launch the Nisus Equation editor when double clicked on in Nisus Writer.
The problem is that if your Word document was written in Word 6.0, it will
not launch the Nisus Equation Editor, after translation into Nisus Writer
when double clicked on. This is should be fixed soon. Currently, the work around is to save Word
6.0 files in Word 5.0 or 5.1
file format if you want to use Nisus Equation Tool with your Word equations.
Question:
When I save a file as "text only," all my custom numbers disappear. How can I convert autonumbers to real numbers?
Answer:
Choose Variables to Text from the Convert submenu
of the Edit menu. If your file has footnotes choose Nisus
® TextPlus from
the Format pop-up menu in the Save As dialog.
Question:
Why can't I can't open old Nisus Writer documents by double-clicking them on the Desktop?
Answer:
Please rebuild your Desktop and try again. I'm sure you'll let me know if that doesn't work.
To rebuild your Desktop Apple suggests that you first run Disk First Aid and then press
COMMAND-OPTION as you restart your Macintosh.
You should not need to do this. For some unknown reason your "desktop database"
(the invisible file on your Macintosh that keeps track of what files are associated
with which applications) did not register the existence of Nisus Writer 6.0 when it
was installed. Rebuilding the Desktop forces the creation of a new database and the
association of all Nisus Writer files with the new Nisus Writer application.
After you are satisfied that Nisus Writer 6.0 functions the way you want and you have
moved any special files you've created (Macros, Glossaries, Style Libraries, User Dictionaries,
Stationery, etc.) from their respective folders in the Nisus Writer 5.1.x folder to their
corresponding folders in the Nisus Writer 6.0 folder you can drag the entire Nisus Writer
5.1.x folder to the Trash and empty it.
Question:
Why can't I save my files using Save As?
Answer:
A very few people have reported this problem. We are looking for patterns among those who have so that we can track down the problem and fix it. (If you are among them please
let us know.)
In the meantime we suggest that you update your Nisus Writer 6.0 to 6.0.1 where the Preferences are set to not use the Navigation Services Manager of the Macintosh OS. This solves the problem.
