NWP and Bookend - Case issues

Post by dlrodriguez »

I'm new and am giving NWP a test drive. One of the first things I tried is to make a bibliography with Bookends. Put in a couple references...a journal and a conference paper. It builds the bibliography and it looks ok, until it goes past the Journal title which is italicized. After that, the entire bibliography becomes small caps for no apparent reason. See attached. Any ideas how to fix this? I'll be honest, if NWP doesn't play nice with Bookends, I won't be able to use it. Thanks.

I'm sorry you're having trouble using Bookends and Nisus Writer together. Before we dig into the problem, a quick question: what versions of Bookends and Nisus Writer Pro are you using?

Bookends recently released a new version (13.4.6) to fix some issues that are very similar to what you've described. If you haven't updated to that version of Bookends, please try that first. If you still have problems let us know and we can continue to investigate.

What format is applied to the bibliography?

I don't have that problem with italics, but, using "Chicago 15A" I find a few odd stretches appearing in a different font. The same stretches appear on the Bookends even if I change the format, or enter those stretches in Bookends itself. For me, it's easy to solve, but there's obviously something going on in Bookends. Here's a screenshot:

I'll report this to Sonny Software.

I have tried 2 different formats: my own that I have built over the years for my AIAA papers and the standard APA 7th that comes with BE with no alterations. Here is what APA 7th looks like (same problem):

This is why I think it's a Bookends problem not a NWP problem. For me this only happens in two of my entries; the rest are as required.

Do you see the same in the Bibliography entry preview pane at the bottom of the Bookends screen? Do you see the small caps there? If all your bibliography entries like that, you might look at "Biblio > Formats Manager…" in Bookends, to see if you've got some setting there doing it. But I'd still get in touch with Sonny Software,

In Bibliography Options in the Format Manager for APA 7th, check the Case options; it may be that the drop-down menu is at "small CAPS":

I have all those cases "as entered". no small caps anywhere as far as I can tell. Sonny Software could not duplicate the problem with my files.

I'd like to continue working with you to try to narrow down the cause of the problem. Thanks!

Ok, made some progress. I wiped out my Application Support/Bookends directory and slowly added back my custom formats and my own library. Don’t see the small caps anymore. I have no idea what “fixed it”. If I see it again, I’ll be certain to see what changed and post. Thanks for everyone's offer to help.

I was able to stop this behavior by not using 9pt font as the default output.
