Extra spaces on paste

Hi,

I've been having some problems with NWE 2.0.1 and copy/paste from other applications.

It started with PopChar X, where inserting Unicode characters added an extra space after each one - unless the character was the first one in the document (where it works OK). After some discussion with their support (who were very helpful) I tried copying and pasting characters from Microsoft Word 2004 into NWE - and had the same problem. Pasting a single character into NWE added a space immediately after it.

Is there a setting somewhere that controls this, or is this a bug in NWE?

I have exactly the same problem, although it was introduced by version 2.1 for my part. Note that an extra space is inserted when copying and pasting in NWE, too.
So, that makes two of us with this problem.

It would be really nice to have a reaction from Nisus on this.

my guess is that this is a "feature" and not a bug.

I do believe it's a feature and I do believe it should not be removed since it's very annoying to paste text and have to manually insert an extra space after the text You have pasted.

One example, if you have a text saying "Let's go for a trip to Stockholm" and You then want to past the text "by car" into the text, it will look like this if this "feature" is removed: "Let's go for a trip by carto Stockholm". And that was case in NWE 2.0.1 as far as I can remember.
But now it will look like this, thanks to the feature: "Let's go for a trip by car to Stockholm". Now You probably see the advantage of this feature.

I'll vote for keep this feature in NWE.

I can understand why you would like NWE to add spaces to a word. But my problem arises when pasting in special characters such as "é" (e acute). I'm typically doing this as part of a word. It is therefore rather annoying to constantly have NWE add an additional space afterwards.

I think that second guessing what the user is trying to do only works if you can be sure that you know what they are doing. With pasting text in, you can't always assume that the user is pasting complete words. If you are pasting in a number of successive foreign language characters it gets quite frustrating to have to backspace after each one. I haven't yet found any other Mac program that has this "feature"

What Microsoft Word does (and it seems a sensible approach that tackles the point that you raise) is add a space if the user selects one or more words from within a Word document for copying and then pasting. In this context Word can tell what you are wanting to do. However, if you insert text from outwith Word, it pastes it "as is" since it can't tell whether you are pasting in a whole word or not.

This would allow use of things such as Popchar X and the Apple Character Palette to paste special characters into a NWE document as well as letting your example work (so long as it was copied and pasted from within NWE). I'd also suggest that having to constantly backspace after each and every special character is a more onerous task for the user than adding a single space when pasting in one or more complete words

I can understand your frustration and could also agree that your suggestion seems to be a reasonable solution. Maybe something to implement in NWE 2.2 (or even 2.1.1?)?

Please, note that this "feature" makes NWE useless for me and the whole community using frequently odd characters entered from the outside (Macro programs, character palette ...). KarenH's solution would be fine. You could also consider to make it an option in the preferences. Please, remove this "feature" as a feature without alternatives as soon as possible.

NWE 2.7 seems to have fixed this "bug,"
however, I found it useful. Is there a way to enable it?

There's really no reason to use paste for é. The Macintosh excels at this kind of stuff. To do e acute, simply type Option-e and then e. Option-e will do the acute, and then the e inserts the letter. There are other shortcuts too:

Option-U = ¨ then type letter
Option-I = ˆ then type letter
Option-` = ` then type letter
Option-C = ç

This is one of the places that the Mac is so much better than Windows. Try doing this in Windows, and you get nothing.
