InfoClick, Maverick and Google

Post by Anne Cuneo »

I feel quite silly writing this, because this should never have happened to me. But it did.
I upgraded to Maverick, I had a back-up of the whole HD one week old, and another three months old.
I opened Maverick, opened mail, and ALL my Gmail mails disappeared. Just like that. In a second. It took me a couple of minutes to understand what was happening because of course, when I opened infoClick, the indexing still gave all the titles to the disappeared mail.
Then I went into my google account through Safari, and found my mailbox squeaky clean. Not one mail left.
I was able to retrieve my old mails from the three months old back-up, because to add insult to injury (or vice-versa) my one-week-old copy went berserk. Il is ruined (no connection to Maverick, I think, it just kind of exploded).
There is a three months gap in my mails.
I am not going to comment on the fact that, as I found out too late, this is the result of a bug that has been there since Beta version No 1 of Maverick, and never corrected. Why this happened to some people and not to others I don't know.
Now to the question: one says that nothing ever get wiped out on the internet. Isn't there a way to retrieve those mails? Google never answered my mail. Can info click indexing, which I have kept, help? long shot, I know, but I have to ask.
Friendly greetings.

I'm really sorry to hear you've lost access to your email on Mavericks. You may already know, but you're not the only one.

It's not nearly as convenient, but don't forget that with gmail you can always log onto Google's web interface and view your email there. All your messages should still be intact, even if Apple Mail won't show them to you.

As for InfoClick, I'm afraid there's no help there. InfoClick merely stores metadata about your email, not the content itself. So while you can see complete subject lines, dates, recipients, etc, in InfoClick, the actual email message/body is not stored. Sorry to not have better news. Hopefully Apple resolves their gmail woes with its recent Mail update and the still forthcoming OSX 10.9.1.

There are online groups for discussing Gmail issues and maybe you could try them.

These are hosted by Google in the "Google Groups" part of their service.

To find Google Groups log into Google online and then at the top right there is a sort of checked pattern icon. Clicking on this will show more icons, but not yet what you need. Click on "more" at bottom and then you will see more icons, you need to click on "Even more" at the bottom of that and now you will be at the Google Products page. You will see "Groups" so click on that. Now you are at your Groups page. Now click on "Browse All" and then the category "Computers". At the bottom right there is a field for "Filter" and here you can put in text that might be in the title of a group you are looking for.

The group I suggest you try is called Gmail-Users. If you put "Gmail-Users" in that filter field you will see in the results the link to that group.

Well, that is the hic: there is nothing left there! Some bug in Maverick connected my computer mail to my gmail mail, and emptied 10 years of gmail! And then it synced with my computer before I realised what was happening, and my computer was wipe out. This didn't happen to me only, other people have complained.

I'll try the users groups, thanks Patrick.

Another thing to consider is that the missing emails will still be on your hard drive. When they were deleted it is only the directory information that is removed, so that they are no longer accessible. However to retrieve those emails you will most likely need to take the hard drive to a specialist who will be able to do that. If you wish to try and get them off the hard drive then you must stop using the hard drive immediately because new files being created on that hard drive might be written over the missing emails.

Now that the horse has bolted it is probably a bit irritating to be told about the benefits of locking the stable door. However I will do this anyway. I think that Apple's Time Machine is really an excellent thing because this will refresh your backup with new and changes files every hour. It is pretty seamless. You don't need a fast connection really for Time Machine because after the initial run, the all backups are incremental, so usually it is quite a small amount of data being transferred. So a cheap USB 2 external hard drive will be fine for Time Machine. The main thing is to make sure that external hard drive is substantially larger than the size of the data being backed up. The larger the Time Machine drive is the farther back into history that Time Machine can retain.

I have quite an extensive backup system because I use my computers professionally as well as for home use, however for "normal" use I recommend three external hard drives in total. One is for Time Machine as I have mentioned. The second one would be for a backup on a weekly basis and then the third hard drive would be for backing up every six weeks. This third one would be kept, if possible, in a building separate from the building the computer is normally in. So, you might keep this third hard drive in your garage if your computer lives in your house.

To manage the backups for these second and third hard drives I recommend ChronoSync. I have used this backup application for many years and I find it to be absolutely excellent. A good clear interface and extremely customisable.

Yikes! What a terrible bug! I really hope you were able to recover your emails. I can't imagine losing all that history in one swoop.
