The "signed under gatekeeper" means very precisely that you don't have to use the App Store version. Any apps bought direct from the creators, e.g. Nisus, rather than from the App Store and so signed will run under 10.8 with its security system and not be blocked.

That said, it may be that when you first run it under 10.8 you get an alert asking you to allow it to access your "Contacts". Address Book.app has been re-named Contacts.app, and any app you run which gives you the possibility of automatically populating author information, for instance, will ask for permission to access contacts in order to gather that information from your v-Card, which is set up when you initialise your system. I have not yet installed 10.8 so can't say for sure, though there are a couple of Scrivener users who have been thrown by this alert.

Apple are doing their level best to keep you safe from trojans, viruses and so forth. Here's an explanation of Gatekeeper you should read.

Mark is exactly right: Gatekeeper is a new Apple feature designed to increase security on Mac OSX. It does not limit you from running applications from outside the Mac App Store if you wish.

The link dshan gives explains this in more detail, but briefly it means that you will be able to run NWP under Gatekeeper, whose default settings only allow running apps downloaded from the App Store or apps signed using a "Developer ID". Now that NWP is signed using a Developer ID, a user can download it from our website directly and still have it run on 10.8 / Gatekeeper.

You will definitely be able to continue purchasing NWP directly from Nisus Software directly, without using the Mac App Store.

One thing that does need to be mentioned is iCloud support: Apple only lets apps distributed via the Mac App Store integrate iCloud. So any iCloud features we may add in the future would only be available in the Mac App Store version. That's not our decision; it's something enforced by Apple. Luckily this appears to be the only restriction we see forthcoming at this point.

Since any document storage "solution" somewhere on the Internet is inherently incompatible with client confidentiality and security requirements, inability to access any iCloud features Nisus may add won't affect this user.
