NWP Document Templates save as Microsoft Word Templates

Post by fbloom »

I am running OS 10.5.8 (leopard)

After I installed the most recent update of NWP, version 1.3, all of my NWP Templates open as Microsoft Word Documents and had Word icons. New templates written on NWP save as Microsoft Word Templates. If I attempt to change the open with in the get info window it will change the individual file, but if I attempt to "change all" it reverts back to Microsoft Word as the default "open with" application.

It appears that Launch Services has not registered NWP as an application that can open .dot files.

Previous versions of NWP did not have this problem. Any ideas?

--- I solved this problem by installing NWP version 1.2 in a separate folder. Now both versions act properly. But if I then put version 1.2 in the trash, then 1.3 reverts to saving as Microsoft Word template.

So did mine - I thought it was a wrong manipulation of mine. Is there a better way to go back to the original without reinstalling NWP 1.2? I know I can always open the template from Nisus with «Open» instead of just clicking on the file, but still...

I should like to insist here: why do templates created in Nisus open as Word documents?
I always say I do not have Word on my computer, but since this has been happening I discovered that I do have a very old copy tucked away in a corner, probably by my daughter, at a time when she thought, as young people are wont to do, that she couldn't possibly trust someone older than herself: her friends used Word, whatever I said, so did she.
That Word version is very old, seven or eight years I should say, slow, and it really gets on my nerves when I see it open. My daughter having in the meantime got over her contrary assertive period, I shall ask her to remove it, even though she does still use my Mac now and then.
Still, question to our specialists: couldn't this be fixed? It's irritating!
Apart from that, I have no complaints, Nisus works perfectly for me.

I've just been reworking some of my own templates and noticed the problem which others wrote about in September, it looked like, but with no definitive response. I am also seeing the documents saved as Microsoft Word 97 - 2004 Template though I'm certain I don't even have an old copy of word on my computer (gave it up for Nisus many years ago).
So, did I miss something in the way of a reply or do we still need one? (I, at least, still need one.)

Technically speaking, the templates are not Word templates; they simply use the same extension (.dot) as Word templates. Double-clicking on a .dot file instructs Mac OS X to open it with the default application for this file type, and if Word is installed on your Mac, then this file type is assigned to Word. Here's a workaround:
  • Select a .dot template file in the Finder.
  • Right-click it, then choose Get Info.
  • In the Get Info pane, expand the "Open with" section and choose Nisus Writer Pro/Express from the list that appears when you click on the dropdown button. (If Nisus Writer Pro/Express does not appear in the list, click on Other and select the application from the Applications folder.)
  • Click on the Change All button.
From now on, any .dot file will be opened in Nisus Writer. If you spend more time in Word, it might be better not to change the default settings in the Finder and to use the Document Manager in Nisus Writer instead to open template files.
